Namaste:)!

I believe this subject is always current and popular as it is the

result of all yogic disciplines.

This doubt came lately to my mind: In what way is Prana different to

Kundalini?

Would it be correct to say that both are energies but with a

different nature?

This idea came to my mind... prana comes to the body from somekind

of universal source of prana, but kundalini is already in the body.

If Shakti, the personification of Kundalini has feminine nature,

perhaps prana has masculine nature (Hanuman as an incarnation of

Shiva).

And this theory actually would solve all my doubts, if it is

correct. !!!

Now I am thinking, is prana different than soul?

I guess these are very subtle questions, maybe it is not possible to

be perceived intellectually.

You were wondering about the difference between Prana and

Kundalini.

When Prana in flows in the human body and performs a

particular function, it is given a particular name, but it is still

Prana.

For example, there are 5 major pranas in the human body:

1. Vyana that circulates through the entire body and is concerned

with the circulation of blood.

2. Udana that is localized in the throat and is concerned with

swallowing, taking the Jiva to Brahman during deep dreamless

sleep and also at the time of death with separating the physical

body from the astral and causal bodies.

3. Samana localized in the navel and focussed on digestion.

4. Apana localized in the anus and responsible for elimination of

urine and faeces.

5. And, just to confuse the situation, one form of Prana is actually

called Prana. This form of Prana is located in the chest and is

responsible for respiration.

There are other sub-pranas:

1. Naga that is responsible for coughing and hiccoughing.

2. Kurna, responsible for the functioning of the eyes.

3. Kirkara responsible for inducing hunger and thirst

4. Devadatta responsible for yawning.

5. Dhananjaya responsible for decomposition of the physical

body.

Kundalini is formed from the union of Apana and Prana. These

latter two pranas tend to move in opposite directions. When they

change direction and unite at the base of the spine, they assume

a new function - taking the consciousness to the knowledge of

the chakras - and thus gain a new name - Kundalini.

The term 'Hatha Yoga' is synonymous with 'Kundalini' and with

the union of Apana-Prana. When the 'Ha' prana of the pingala

nadi and the 'Tha' prana of the ida nadi change their direction

and unite or achieve 'Yoga' at the base of the spine, this new

combined prana is called 'Kundalini'.

Many thanks Omprem for the lucid reply!

Is it correct to say that the way to reverse the flow of Apana and

Prana is through breathing control (pranayama)?

Does meditation have to do with control of prana? If not, why is it

then necessary for the spiritual path?

Om namah Sivaya!

PS: If anyone could recommend any books or websites on this subject,

I would love to read and learn from there.

Please do not attempt to raise Kundalini via the internet. You

need a teacher by your side.

But for general discussion, yes, certain forms of pranayama can

be used to create kundalini. Certain bandhas and mudras are

also useful here.

Obviously, hatha yoga can also lead to the creation of kundalini

after first purifying the nadis and chakras.

There is more to meditation than japa and one-pointedness.

Meditation entails a specific process that includes the creation

and raising of kundalini. This process is automatic, a natural

process that is started by japa, sincere yearning for God, and

one-pointedness.

Thanks. This is valuable information to me even if i should not or

would not practice yet.

It is great when everything makes sense. Sometimes teachers only give

some techniques, without really explaining how these work, which i

personally find scary. Perhaps I dont have the required Bhakti to

trust a teacher totally.

Of course its the practice that is important to verify the

techniques.

But still, I think we (seekers) should know what is hidden behind

the techniques or the path, that we are about to choose.
