Prana - the eterenal Force

===========================

Prana is a force which is source of all the forces present in the

universe. Electricity, Magnetism, atomic energy, gravitational

force, thought, will power are all manifestation of Prana. Prana is

the only direct link between us and the Supreme Truth.

Our Shastra (sacred books) have a lot of description about

Prana and its manifestations.Atharva-veda says:

Prano viraat prano destro

Pranam sarva upastey

Pranoh surya chandrama

Pranmahu prajapatim

Prana is Universal, Prana moves all. Prana should be worshipped

through Pranayama. Prana is Sun, Moon and basis of all in the

universe.

Another Mantra says :

Tejaso sahose Balmasi bhratoasi

Devanam dhaynamaasi Vishwamasi vishvayu

Hey Prana you are light, you are enthusiasm, you are the force

you are the Halo you are abode of all divine qualities, you are this

Universe and you are the life of this Universe.

Taitreya Upanisada says

Pranatvajey va khalvirman bhutani jayantey

Pranani jatani jivanti

Pranam praytyabhi samvishanti

All living beings take birth due to Prana, they live with Prana

and enter in the Prana on death.

Chhandogya Upanisada has a beautiful shloka on Prana:

Sarvani va Imani bhutani pranmeva

Misham vishanti pranambhyujjitah

(We all are born out of Prana, live into Prana and merge into Prana.)

Aitreya Brahman also gives great importance to Prana

Soyamakashah pranen vrihtyavishthhvyaa

Tadyathhayam aakashah pranen vrihatya vistabdhaa

Aivam sarvani bhutani api piplikabhaya pranitey

Vrihtya vishthhavyanr twevam vidhaat

(Whole universe is inside Prana. Prana supports this universe. This

universe stays because of the power of prana. From tiny ant to big

elephant all are living due to Prana.)

Some Philosophers say Prana is being transmitted from the

centre of Universe and reaches us through radiations. Whereas some

opine that Plasimic energy transmitted by the Sun is in fact Prana.

Maharishi Aurobindo explains Prana as of 4 types, lowest prana,

lower prana, higher prana and the highest prana. Perhaps this

imaginary division is based upon the intensity/vibration of Pranic

force.

Some Yogis divide prana into 3 categories viz. Slow, medium and

intense. Those who are under the influence of slow prana are having

unarranged and disturbed thoughts. They do not influence others.

Most of the people are of medium prana. They have clear thoughts,

lot of Rajoguna and balanced mind. They get success in day to day

jobs and lead comfortable life. But these people have no control

over desires and sensuary demands. They are subjected to

infatuation, anger, greed, impatience and inner conflicts. They work

more according to circumstances and are unable to mould circumstances

as per their desires.

Those under the influence of intense prana are more controlled

in their thoughts and deeds. They have full control over their

desires and senses. They shine in the world as poets, painters,

singers, politicians, yogis even sometimes as dictators.

If we control our prana through pranayam we may change our

category from lower prana to higher prana and will have more control

over our desires and sense and thoughts. This meditation of Prana

has become so popular that variants of Pranayama are seen all

around.

Prana is always moving. We human beings get Prana through

breathing, from water, from sun-shine, from food and from dhyana.

Enthusiams, joy, peace, intelligence, good-will, fearlessness and

healthy life are indicative of Prana available and moving properly in

the body. On the other hand disappointment, disease, fear etc denote

Prana are not being supplied or are not moving properly in the body.

Pranayama is the method by which we can correct inflow/movement of

prana in the body.

Prana has two types of movements. Centrifugal and

centripital. Attraction of external prana into our body and then its

leaving the body through one of our body parts or by thoughts is

denoted by this movement.

Prana (contd..)

Prana has two types of movements. Centrifugal and

centripital. Attraction of external prana into our body and then its

leaving the body through one of our body parts or by thoughts is

denoted by this movement.

Pranayam is a science and normally it should be done under

guidance of a trained teacher. However to start with some exercises

could be done harmlessly on a daily basis. These exercises give

excellent results and pave our way for next higher stages. There is

no meditation equal to Pranayama as per our Shastra. Manusmriti

says :

Dahyantey dhyyaymananam dhatunam hi yathha malaa,

Tathhindriyanam dahyantey dosha pranasya nigrihaat,

Praanayamaidahe doshandharnabhishcha kilivisham

Pratyaharen sasgandhiya nenanishavrayushaat.

(Like fire burns the impurities of metals, similarly Pranayama burns

the impurities in the Indriyas. Pranayama kills impurities, Dharnaa

kills sins. Control of senses kills desires and Dhayana kills Moha

(attachement to wordly things).

Before doing any pranayama, it is always better to utter a few

shlokas regarding prana, to indicate to our inner-self, the purpose

behind our Meditation. There is a beautiful shloka, which can be

used as Upasana of Prana before starting pranayama.

Pranasya Namo Tasya Sarvamidam varo

Yo Bhutah Sarvsapeshvaro

Yasmin Sarva Pratishthhitam

(I pray to that Prana who controls this Universe, who is God of all

living beings.

I pray to that prana who is the basis of all things.)

Aum Prana-apana vyanodaan samanaa mey

Shudhyantaam Jyotiraha virajaa vipaapmaa bhuyahu Swaha

(Hey AUM ( the source of Prana), let my 5 pranas (Prana, Apana,

Vyana, Udanaa & Samanaa) be

purified. Let me be without rajoguna, sin-less and pure. This is

my only prayer to you.

The first Pranayama to be done in the beginning should always be

the exercise to equate the breathing. We do not breath properly.

One should sit in a comfortable posture and by closing eyes

should utter any of the prayers given above. Then inhale for a

count of 5 and without keeping air inside slowly exhale for the count

of 5. We can extend slowly the count by one after a minimum of 15

days. There is no short cut in pranayma and and hurry made will lead

to some disturbance/illness instead of giving good results. One can

comfortably take the count upto 16. At least 15 minutes, two times

a day should be given to this pranayama, and normally after 2-3

months, one will be able to see the benefits which include, mental

peace, less thoughts etc. This exercise can be safely done by

anyone without any teacher. The only warning is not to do it in

haste.

Now let us see what Swami vivekananda said on Pranayama exercises.

"First sit in the posture in which you can sit still for a long

time. All the nerve currents which are working pass along the

spine. The spine is not intended to support the weight of the body.

Therefore the posture must be such that the weight of the body is

not on the spine. Let it be free from all pressure. Take a deep

breath and fill the lungs. Slowly throw the breath out. Take it

through one nostril and fill the lungs, and throw it out slowly

through the other nostril. Some of us do not breathe deeply enough.

Others cannot fill the lungs enough. These breathings will correct

that very much. Half an hour in the morning and half and hour in

the evening will make you another person. This sort of breathing

exercise is never dangerous. The other exercise (of holding the

breath) should be practiced very slowly. If ten minutes are a drain

only take five. "

When one has practiced above exercise for about 3 months,

second exercise can be started. Sitting in the comfortable posture

and after having said the prayers etc. close your right nostril by

your thumb and inhale slowly from the left nostril to the count of 4

hold the breath inside for the count of 8 and then opening your right

nostril (and closing left) exhale to the count of 8. Keep you full

consciousness on the counting and no thoughts should be entertained.

Now every week increase the holding by count 2 thus making Kumbhaka

(holding breath inside) for more time till it reaches the count of

16. The weekly calender thus be:

1st week : inhale 4; kumbhaka 8 exhale 8

2nd week : inhale 4 ; kumbhaka 10; exhale 8

3rd week inhale 4; kumbhaka 12; exhale 8

4th week inhale 4; kumbhaka 14; exhale 8

5th week inhale 4; kumbhaka 16; exhale 8

when we reach this ratio of 1:4:2 (i.e. inhale for 1 hold for 4

and exhale for 2) then it becomes one complete pranayama. Any hurry

made in this will lead to disaster….so move slowly. If one goes

slower than the above, it will not do any harm…and even a day faster

may create problems.

Now one can continue pranayama to the count of 4-16-8 for 3

months and then can increase 1 count in inhaling (that will result in

4 counts extra in holding and 2 counts extra in exhaling) making our

count now 5-20-10. Those in to the domestic lives can safely take the

pranayama upto 8-32-16.

While doing Kumbhaka one can think of golden colored light or

light blue shining light or see the idol of Ishta devata. Even

concentrating over the air coming in the nostrils, held in lungs and

then coming out, can also be done, if one can not imagine the colors.

After every three months one can increase inhaling by 1 then

practice the new combination for another 3 months before next

increase. If done slowly in such a way it will not harm and will

excellent results.

One has to be very careful of the diet during pranayama. Taking

too much of Non-veg food, spicy food etc. are not advisable.

Smoking and drinking shuld not be mixed with Pranayama otherwise it

will do more harm than benefits.

Swami vivekananda writes about diet as follows :-

( " The food must be simple and taken several times a day. Never

get very hungry. He who eats too much cannot be a Yogi. He who

fasts too much cannot be a yogi. He who sleeps too much or who keeps

awake cannot be a Yogi. A lazy or a very hard worker also can not be

a Yogi. Proper food, proper exercise and proper wakefulness-these

are necessary for any success. Proper diet means, generally, simply

do not eat highly spiced foods. There are 3 sorts of mind, says the

Yogi, according to the elements of nature. One is the dull mind,

which covers the luminosity of the soul. Then there is that which

makes people active and lastly that which makes them calm and

peaceful. I am always asked -Shall I give up eating meat? My

master said," do not give up anything in nature. Make it so hot for

nature that she will give you up. There will come a time when you

cannot possibly eat meat. The very sight of it will disgust you.

There will come a time when many things you are struggling to give up

will be distasteful, positively loathsome.)

Thank you very much, Silentsoulji, for this interesting topic of

prana. I know it has been discussed before, but I was wondering if we

could approach the subject again of the different types of prana and

their duties. How can we asses if we are lacking in a certain type of

prana, and once we are aware of this how can we correct it? Can we

have too much of a certain type of prana in the body, and if so what

harms can it do?

Again, I thank you for this great topic.

With much love,

Erica

very inspiring postings about prana!

but i was surpised to read this:

"Those under the influence of intense prana are more controlled

> > in their thoughts and deeds. They have full control over their

> > desires and senses. They shine in the world as poets, painters,

> > singers, politicians, yogis even sometimes as dictators."

how can a dictator have control over his desires and senses and be a

victim of the desire for power at the same time?

Control over desires is really contradictory to being a criminal, but

i do believe that it is true, even if its contradictory.

How important is pranayama actually? A great helping tool in sadhna.

On the other hand it wouldnt lead to self realization, as we saw in

the example of the dictator, provided that the goal of pranayama is

to make our prana intense. Is pranayama and meditation comparable?

hope I am not asking too much:)! I all full of doubts and questions

sometimes!:)
