Happy Tamil New Year, Sankarji.

I was wondering if you could please explain to those of us that are

not as familiar with Tamil culture what special things happen on

Tamil New Year Day. Do you celebrate with a special puja, festivals,

food, etc?

With love,

Erica

Dear Erica,

Tamil New Year is celebrated on the first day of the

month 'Chithirai', when the sun enters 'Mesha Rasi'. This corresponds

to April 13th or 14th or rarely 15th in the English Calendar.

On this day, people rise before sunrise, wash their hair. The married

women folk, also take a shower with a special kind of turmeric

called 'Kasturi Manjal', and decorate their hair with jasmine

flowers. Early in the morning, the whole family go to the temple and

do archana, or 'abhisheka', in the name of their family, and pray

that the coming year should be prosperous and bring good luck.

The youngsters fall at the feet of their elders, and seek their

blessings.

They also have special pujas or prayers in their houses. They make

vadas, payasam (kheer), and a special sweet dish called 'poli'. They

offer all this as Neivedhya (offering) unto the Lord, pray, and later

have prasad.

They visit the houses of their near and dear ones, and exchange

sweets and sometimes gifts. They wish each other that the coming year

brings good luck to them.

I pray that in the coming year, we all rise higher in sadhna and move

closer to out goal.

Hari Aum !!!
