Guest guest
Continued from Pt I... Satish, I really would like to see what Meher Baba said, if you can please post, since you started it with the statement of how an avatar can only come in a 'male body'. But until then, I would like to post some of the definitions I found on 'avatar' from some of my books: Avatar - Incarnation of God on earth (excerpted from "HINDUISM, An Introuduction, Shakunthala Jagannathan) avatara "Descent". - A God born in a human (or animal) body. A central concept of Saktism, Smartism and Vaishnavism. See: _incarnation, Ishta Devata, Vaishnavism_" incarnation: From _incarnate, "to be made flesh." The soul's taking on a human body. --DIVINE INCARNATION: The concept of _avatara_. The Supreme Being's (or other Mahadeva's) taking of human birth, generally to reestablish _dharma_. This doctrine is imiportant to several Hindu sects, notably Vaishnavism, but not held by most Saivites. . (the above 2 definitions from "DANCING WITH SIVA, Hinduism's Contemporary Catechism" by Satguru Sivaya Suybramuniyaswami avatar - (descent) An incarnation of Divine Copnsciousness on earth in an act of free will in order to accomplish a Divine purpose. "for protection of the good, for the destruction of evil-doers, and to re- establish righteousness, I am born from age to age." _Bhagavad Gits: Ch. 4, v. 8. Hindu tradtion gives an account of ten incarnations of _Visnu. (excerpted from: BLESSED SOULS, The Teachintsof Karunamayi, Vol. I" To be continued...
