Guest guest
Dear Friends, I would like to continue posting a little from "SRI KARUNAMAYI, A Biography." Amma's mother was told by Ramana Maharshi that she would give birth to a divine soul. Here is an excerpt from the chapter entitled, 'The Mother About Her Daughter': "Thinking back with awe about the miraculous pronouncement by Sri Ramana Maharshi that she would give birth to the Mother of the Universe, Smt. Annapurnamba remarked, 'The day and moment in which that merciful Bhagavan Ramana spoke to me will never come again in life. Only out of divine love and everlasting devotion can one get the grace of Bhagavan and not through any other penance." As Smt. Annapurnamba reminisced about the past, her implicit faith in her _Guru_ was apparent. "Soon after the gractous words of Bhagavan Ramana, the sad news of His earthly departrue was heard. After that I visited the Ramana _ashram_ only twice. Is not Sri Ramana eternal? It is my firm belief that Ramana Maharshi, who cast off His mortal body just as one discards old clothes, remains alive to me forever." With reference to her daughter, Smt. Annapurnamba also recalled many loving and miraculous incidents. Her mother fondly remembered how little Vijayeswari (Karunamayi) loved butter, cheese and milk. Especially, she recalled the pleasure she felt when she fed the baby with rice mixed with cream. One of the first of a series of miracles occurred during the tonsure ceremony, or shaving of the head, when Vijayeswari was only three years old. On this astrologically auspicious day, the family and some close relatives and friends had gone to the famed temple at Tirupati. After bathing, the group walked around the northern side of the _mandir_ where the baby had been sleeping. To their great surprise and anxiety, they espied a large cobra shielding the child with it's hood. However, after offering prostrations, the king of snakes contracted its hood and slowly moved away from the child. Her mother thankfully took the sleeping girl into her arms, but the priest of the temple, who had witnessed the whole event, informed the gatherthng that the child was divine. A second miraculous event occurred in the year l96l, when Vijayeswari was only three years old. It was the month of _Margashira_ (December/January) and after reading Her songs in the _Thiruppavai_, the women worshipped Andal, the 9th centurey _bhakta_ who had married and merged into the temple idol of Krishna. During the afternoon of that recitation, Her mother was anointing the head of Vijayeswari and applying _kajal_ to Her eyes. Suddenly, Smt. Annapurnamba was blinded by the dazzling lights of the sun and the moon in the gaze of her daughter. Speaking of that experience, the mother recalls: "I closed my eyes. I felt my body sinking in amazement. After that I was even afraid to touch my own child." (p. l9-20) Note: Amma's mother has departed this world. I believe this book was reprinted/revised in l999 but the lst edition was originally written in l992. Blessings, Kathy @}--->----
