The TRUTH THAU ART - TAT TWAM ASI

BG CH.XVIII, v.66

"Sarvadharmanparitayjya Mamekem Sharanam Vraja, Aham Twa Sarvapapebhya

Mokshyaishiami Ma Suchah.

Abandon all varieties of religion or duties to Me, the all-powerful and

supporting Lord, take refuge in Me alone. I shall deliver you from all

sinful reactions, fear not.

Lord Sri Krishna is promising here that if you surrender all your body

related or egoistic duties, whatever they may be, to Him, He shall take care

of your ultimate welfare. What are the body related duties? Anything or any

action performed with an attitude of me and mine, they may be thoughts, or

actions to fulfill one's desires, or even taking care of one's family

members etc. Total dispassion is called for here but at the mental level and

not at the physical level. Perform all actions by all means but with an

attitude of "Ishvara Arpitam Buddhi" and accept the results of your actions

with an attitude of "Prasad Buddhi", i.e. do every thing for the Lord and

accept the results as His Grace or gift.

In verse (VIII - 7) the Lord says, "Therefore, Arjuna, think of Me at all

times and carryout your prescribed duty of fighting (as an offering to Me).

With all your activities dedicated to Me and your mind and reason thus set

on Me, you will doubtless come to Me".

The second part of V.66 is about surrender - "Mamekem Sharnam Vraja". During

the evolutionary process of the soul, surrender can take many forms,

starting with bowing down in front of the Lord's form, dedicating all your

actions at His feet and gradually shifting your individuality towards the

Totality. The ultimate surrender is the realization of the Self, "Aham

Brahmasmi" and effacing all forms of duality. In the last verse of the 14th

chapter, Lord Krishna says, "I am the basis of Brahman (of the Vedas), which

is immortal, imperishable and eternal and is the constitutional position of

ultimate happiness".
