Jaya Sri Radhey!

May Lord provide strength and consolation to all grieving souls

affected by this unfortunate event.

Whenever a tragedy happens, we should remember and ponder more on the

great teachings of Saints, Bhagavadgita and Bhagavatam.

"nalinI dala gata jalam ati taralaM

tadvajjIvitam atizaya capalam,

viddhi vyAdhyabhimAna grastaM

lokaM zokahataM ca samastam

bhaja govindaM bhaja govindaM

govindaM bhaja mUDhamate"

A dewdrop trembling from a lotus petal

So uncertain is the life...not known for how long!

The entire world that you see around, know,

Is full of dole, disease, and conceit. (4)

Seek the Lord, Seek, Seek, Seek the Lord,

Seek alone the Lord...O mud-headed fool!

The water-drop playing on a lotus petal has an EXTREMELY UNCERTAIN

existence; so also is LIFE ever UNSTABLE!

Understand, the VERY WORLD is consumed by disease(death) and conceit,

and is riddled with pangs.

Seek Lord Govind, Seek Govind, Seek Govind, O Fool!

Life is uncertain in itself, and even during its uncertain existence

it is consumed by disease and conceit, persecuted by a hundred

different voiceless pangs!

Since life is SO UNCERTAIN, and the world is in a sense NOTHING but

SORROW, the general import of the verse is that there is NO TIME for

anyone TO WASTE. Death rarely announces his visit. Therefore, strive

from RIGHT NOW.

'Now' and 'HERE' seems to be the URGENCY behind the verse.

We are reminded here of Lord Buddha's CRY on the same theme, with a

SIMILAR sense of urgency:

'ALL is MISERY, misery; ALL is MOMENTARY, momentary.'

'sarvaM duHkhaM duHkhaM

sarvaM kSaNikaM kSaNikam'

Lord Kishna also reminds us in Gita 8.15:

'...duHkhAlayaM azAzvataM..'

and 13.8:

'..janma mRtyu jarA vyAdhi

duHkha doSAnu darzanam'

Here is more from Sri Shankara's Bhaja Govindam:

'kA te kAntA kaste putraH

saMsAro 'yam atIva vicitraH

kasya tvaM kaH kuta AyAtaH

tattvaM cintaya tadiha bhrAtaH (8)

bhaja govindaM bhaja govindaM

govindaM bhaja mUDhamate'

Who is your wife (husband)?

Who is your son (daughter)?

Supremely WONDERFUL indeed is this (samsara) entanglement!

Of WHOM are you?

>From where have you come?

O brother (sister), think of that TRUTH here!

Seek Lord Govinda, Seek Govind, Seek Beloved Govinda, O Fool!

'kastvaM ko 'haM kuta AyAtaH

kA me jananI ko me tAtaH

iti paribhAvaya sarvam asAraM

vizvaM tyaktvA svapna vicAram (23)

bhaja govindaM bhaja govindaM

govindaM bhaja mUDhamate'

Who are you?

Who am I?

>From where did I come?

Who is my mother?

Who is my father?

Thus ENQUIRE, leaving aside the ENTIRE world-of-experience (vishvam),

essenceless and MERE dreamland born of imagination (svapna vicaaram).

Seek Lord Govinda, Seek Govinda, Seek Beloved Govinda, O Fool!

Poetic version:

Who is your wife and who is your son??

This world-of-changes, know, is a wonder of wonders

Of whom are you?...whence have you come?

Brother, think of the TRUTH...here and now!! (8)

Who are you?...Who am I?...Whence are we?

Who is my mother?...Who the father?

ENQUIRE thus WITHIN,CASTING OFF THE NONESSENTIAL...

The world entire...the phantasy of MERE DREAM! (23)

Seek the Lord, Seek, Seek, Seek the Lord,

Seek alone the Lord...O mud-headed fool!

'viSayAndhyAyatazcittaM viSayeshu viSajjate

mAmanusmarazcittaM mayyeva pravalIyate"

(Bhagavatam 11.14.27)

Lord Krishna declares to His friend Uddhava-

"THE MIND OF A MAN WHO THINKS OF MATERIAL OBJECTS AND WORLDLY

SUBJECTS IS ATTACHED TO THEM BUT THE MIND OF ONE WHO REMEMBERS ME IS

MERGED IN ME ALONE."

"tasmAdasadabhidhyAnaM yathA svapna manorathAM,

hitvA mayi samAdhatsva mano madbhAva bhAvitam"

(Bhagavatam 11.14.28)

"THEREFORE, GIVING UP DWELLING ON UNREAL THINGS

AND NOT ATTACHING YOUR MIND TO WORLDLY DESIRES

AND "PERSONS", WHICH ARE NO BETTER

THAN DREAMS OR FANCIES, (svapna manoratham)

CONCENTRATE YOUR HEART AND MIND ON ME,

ATTACHING IN LOVE AND DEVOTION TO ME."
