SADHANA IN THE WORLD: A railway engineer came in. He had a doubt to be

cleared.

"Swamiji, you say that we should avoid the company of a worldly man.

Are we not all worldly men, Swamiji? If I, too, am worldly, what do I

get by labelling another as a worldly man and avoiding his company? I

think this is possible only when I renounce the world and come here."

"What is there here? Is this not the world? Is Rishikesh not part of

the world? How can you renounce the world? Where will you go to if you

renounce?"

These questions put the engineer in a thoughtful but very receptive

mood.

"What is meant by a worldly man," said the Master, "is one who is full

of worldliness. A man may live in the world and yet be not of it. That

is the secret. Never allow the evils of the world to get admission into

your heart. Enthrone God in the heart."

"I try to meditate on the Lord in the heart and do Japa. I find it very

difficult. My mind always wanders. It has no taste for Japa," said the

engineer.

"Go on repeating the Name mechanically as a parrot does. In the course

of time the Mantra-power will awaken in you a real love for God. The

real divine feeling will lead you to Bhava Samadhi. Persistent effort

is necessary."

It is the sole panacea for our sufferings and calamities." - Swami

Jaya Sri Radhey! Namaste.

"God is realized by following the Path of Truth.

One should always chant His Name.

Even while one is performing one's duties,

the MIND should be LEFT WITH GOD.

Suppose I have a CARBUNCLE on my back.

I perform my DUTIES, but the

MIND IS DRAWN to the carbuncle."

- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

'How are we to RECONCILE the worldly ENTANGLEMENTS

and engagements with Spiritual DETACHMENT?

See how the carpenter's housewife busies herself with all and sundry.

With one hand she pushes the paddy to be ponded in the mortar;

with the other hand she embraces and suckles her baby.

At the same time she bargains with the customer for the flattened

rice.

In the midst of all thes activities her MIND is ON the HAND pushing

the paddy lest the pestle should hurt it.

Likewise do your worldly ACTIVITIES; but in the MIDST of them KEEP

the MIND FIXED on the Lord.

Deviate NOT on any account from Godly PATH."

"However much you may try to you will not achieve anything

if you do not get the GRACE of the Lord.

That Grace again, is NOT easily obtained.

All EGOISM ought to be WIPED OUT as a PRELUDE to it.

If the egoistic feeling, "I am the DOER," takes possession of your

heart, that ATTITUDE will ALIENATE you from Iswara (Lord).

The Lord REMAINS HIDDEN in that heart which is TAINTED by EGOISM."

- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

'Rainwater does not accumulate on HIGH, ELEVATED PLACE.

IT flows away to a LOW REGION.

Even so, the GRACE OF THE LORD DOES NOT DESCEND IN THE HEARTS OF THE

HAUGHTY AND VAINGLORIOUS.

IT DAWNS IN THE HEARTS OF THE LOW AND MEEK.'

'How does one shall attain God's Grace?

Can you with a distressed heart PRAY TO HIM

FOR HIS GRACE AND REVELATION?

You shed pots full of tears for the sake of your spouse,

children and property.

HAVE YOU SHED A DROP OF TEAR SEEKING THE LORD?

As long as the baby is interested in toys,

the mother minds her own business.

But as soon as the baby throws away those things and

SCREAMS, the mother rushes to attend on it.

YOU BEHAVE LIKEWISE TOWARDS GOD;

AND HE WILL REVEAL HIMSELF TO YOU.'

-Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

"A boat may be floating on the water,

but NO water should be ALLOWED to get into it.

Man may live in the world, but NO worldly desire

ought to take possession of him."

- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

"BE in the world even as

a MAID-SERVANT in a rich man's house.

For all intents and purposes she CLAIMS

her master's children and property as her OWN.

But at the CORE OF HER HEART she KNOWS that

THEY DO NOT BELONG TO HER and

she REMAINS FIRM in that ATTITUDE.

Seemingly own worldly things.

BUT HAVE NO ATTACHMENT TO THEM.

As the maid-servant can with EASE RELINQUISH

her ASSUMED OWENERSHIP of the MASTER's property,

BE PREPARED FOR SEPARATION FROM EARTHLY POSSESSION."

-Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa
