Guest guest
Jaya Sri Radhey! Namaste. Holi - Spring Festival of Colours Holi is the most colourful festival of the Hindus and falls on the Full moon day in the month of Phalgun according to the Hindu Calendar which is the month of March as per the Gregorian Calendar. This Holi festival has many elements of primitive and prolific rites and reveries that have defied civilisation and prudery. During the three days of this festival, particularly the whole country, towns, cities and villages - go gay with merry makers, streets, parks and public places are crowded with people, daubed in diverse colours and looking funny. Children and youngsters vie with each other in being original and use fast and sticky colours. It is all a mirthful abandon for them. This festival of joy, mirth and buoyancy is celebrated when both Man and Nature cast off their winter gloom. Holi heralds the arrival of Spring - the season of hope and new beginnings and marks the rekindling of the spirit of life. Gulmohurs, corals, silk-cottons and mango trees start flowering, gardens and parks present a glorious spectacle of a riot of colours - crimson, red, pink, orange, golden yellow, lemon and a variety of glittering greens. The flowers breathe out their fragrance into space and brooks and streams leap in the valleys. The joy bubbling in hearts find expression in dance, drama and music. The color, noise and entertainment that accompanies the celebration of Holi bears witness to a feeling of oneness and sense of brother- hood. No other festival brings home the lesson of spiritual and social harmony as well as the festival of Holi!! People celebrate this festival of colours joyously with friends and relatives, rubbing gulal and throwing colored water on each other. On this day, people come out wearing pure white clothes and gather together in a common place where they play Holi with gay abandon. The magic of playing with colour, which begins early in the morning, continues through the day. Traditional delicacies are prepared in advance and served while playing Holi. Families, friends, and neighbors get together to enjoy this festival of colors. The spring air is still cool, the water cold, but revelers make a special punch of an intoxicant called bhang, which is mixed in milk, to add to the festivities. This festival of Holi - a festival of myriad colours, of gaity, of friendships and re-unions all over the country. Thus Holy is certainly a vital part of our Indian life and culture in which religion still is a living force. http://www.samachar.com/religion/index.html Also visit the link to read more about the celebration at: http://isdl.org/festivals-holi.html Jaya Sri Radhey! Guest guest
Jaya Sri Radhey! Another sublime verse by the Gopi-Saint Mirabai on Holi pastimes of the Lord: sîla santoSha kî kesara gholî prema prîti picakâra uRata gulâla, lâla bhaye bâdala barsata rang apâra ghaTa ke saba paTa khola diye haim loka lâja saba Dâra mîrâ ke prabhu giradhara nâgara caraNa kamala balihâra The saffron of virtue and contentment Is dissolved in the water-gun of love and affection. Pink and red clouds of emotion are flying about, Limitless colors raining down. All the covers of the earthen vessel of my body are wide open; I have thrown away all shame before the world. Mira's Lord is the Mountain-Holder, the suave lover. I sacrifice myself in devotion to His lotus feet. ---------- As Lord Krishna left for Mathura plunging the Vraja-vasis, the resident devotees of Vraja, into the ocean of Divine distress of separation, Saint Mirabai sings in this verse of 'Viraha Madhuri': "Holi piya bina laagaam ree khaaree...." How bitter is carnival (Holi) day with my Lover travelling. O desolate town, night and day wretched, my small bed in the attic lies empty. Rejected and lost in His absence, stumbling unde the pain. Must You wander from country to country? It hurts me. These fingers ache counting the days You've been gone. Spring arrives with its (Holi) festival games, the chiming anklets, drumbeats and Flute, a sitar - yet no Beloved visits my gate. What makes You forget? Here I stand begging You, Dark One, don't shame me! Mira comes to embrace You birth after birth still a Virgin. ('For Love of The Dark One- Songs of Mirabai'- Andrew Schelling) Jaya Sri Radhey! Guest guest
Jaya Sri Radhey! 'Syama Piya Morae Rang dae Cunariya..' a Holi Brjabhasa Bhajan by Gopi-Saint Mira Bai "syama piya morae rang dae cunariyaa" - 'Oh my Dearest Dark BelLoved, Syama! Please bestow the color of Divine Love upon my 'chunaris', the material veils covering my heart, mind and soul! "aisi ranga dae ke rang naahi chooTae dhobiya dhoyae caahae yeh saaree umariaa" - Please color the 'chunari' in the Dye of Divine Love that it will never fade away, no matter if the washerman washes it for as long as this entire life of mine or even in my future lifetimes to come. "laal na rangaun mein hari na rangaun apane hi ranga mein rang dae cunariyaa" - I don't want my robe and veil dyed in red, nor do I want it in green. I only desire my whole self to be dyed in 'Syama', the color of Yourself alone, the color of selfless Divine Love! "binaa rangaaye mein to ghar nahi jaungi beet hi jaaye caahe yeh saaree umariyaa" - There is no turning back without having myself colored in Your passionate Love! I will not return home, even if I have to wait my entire lifetime. "miraa ke prabhu giridhara naagara prabhu caranana men, Hari caranana mein Syama caranana mein laagee najariaa" - The Lord of Mira is the Cowherd Playboy, Giridhara! She has intense longing for Him and fixed her vision in the lotus feet of her Lord, Hari, the Dark Beloved! (This very popular bhajan of Saint Mira Bai is available on the "Bhajan Sandhya" of Sri. Anup Jalota) Jaya Sri Radhey!

Guest guest
Jaya Sri Radhey! All Bhagavat-Premis, loving devotees of the Lord enjoy the colorful Holi Celebrations of Divine Love. "bhaagavat rasik rasik kee baate rasik binaa ko vu samajha sake naa" It is a pleasure to share my perceptions with blessed devotees through the translation of Devotional Songs composed by the Rasik Saints. Here is 'my perception' of another delicious song from 'Holi Madhuri' of 'Prema Rasa Madira' composed by Jagadguru Sri Kripaluji Maharaj, which is also available on the internet at: http://jkp.org/literature/index.html http://www.jkp.org/literature/leela_madhuri/3.Leela%20Madhuri% 20Pads.pdf "horee aayee ree, aree vo natha vaaree! ghoonghat ke pat kholi kheli le, lai pyaree! kara picikaaree, bahuta dinana se kahati rahee tu, horee aavati bana vaaree, jo toya Dara gurujana ko to calu, jamunaa paar utar pyaaree, jo toya Dara mohoom te kachu to, sang lai calu sakhiyana saaree, manabhaayee 'kripaalu' kari le tu, yaha tero piya giri dhaaree!" In the tempting words of mischievous Lord Krishna, the Saint-Poet is convincing an innocent Gopi (bhoree Radha) who is hesitating and not prepared to play holi: "horee aayee ree, aree vo natha vaaree!" "O My sweet friend! O beautiful maiden with charming nose-ring! The long awaited Spring festival of colors, Holi has arrived!! Why are you delaying to join Me in this jubiliant pastime? "ghoonghat ke pat kholi kheli le, lai pyaree! kara picikaaree", O My dearest, lovely girl! Just lift up your hiding veil for My sake, and take up the water-squirting syringe in your soft, tender hands! "bahuta dinana se kahati rahee tu, horee aavati bana vaaree", You have been boasting all along that you would get even with Me for My past pranks! Now the time has come! You have also threatened Me before that you would definitely defeat Me in the games and capture Me during our play of Holi. Then come forward! Keeping your word, show Me your skill!! "jo toya Dara gurujana ko to calu, jamunaa paar utar pyaaree", If you are afraid of the elders at home and family etiquette, let Us cross the Yamuna River and go to the other side so that no one in Braja can find out about Our intimacy. Come on, sweetheart! Let Us escape to the remote wilderness!! "jo toya Dara mohoom te kachu to, sang lai calu sakhiyana saaree", Don't you trust Me or My words? Knowing Me as the Charming Cheat, are you afraid of My clever tricks? If so, bring along all your group of girlfriends, as many as you wish to escort you for your protection!" In the concluding verse, the Trickmaster, Lord Krishna softens the heart of reluctant Gopi with His sweet seducing words, "manabhaayee 'kripaalu' kari le tu, yaha tero piya giri-dhaaree!" "O My darling beauty! Why are you still hesitating to join your Divine Beloved in playing Holi? I have even lifted the Mountain Govardhana to protect you and your family. What possible harm can occur to you in My company? Don't forget that I am yours OWN forever, your dearmost Beloved and Soulmate! Let Us not miss the chance of playing jubiliant Holi together in this lifetime (descension). You are privileged to do with Me as you please! Trust I am eternally Yours!!" raadhe! holi aayee re! pyaaree! holi aayee re!! aayeere, aayee re aree, holi aayee re aree! o natha-vaaree!!! All glories to Holi Madhuri! Jaya Sri Radhey!
