Guest guest
Hi Satish! Can you expand on the story of Indra and Virochan for us here? A brief account by someone would be useful for all. Thanks.. _/\_ Tat twam asi Uma .... safar_x wrote: >.... Guest guest
Indra and Virochan were step brothers. They had a common father, Bramha, and seperate mothers, Diti and Aditi. When they became 18, their father sent them to learn as to what is "Atma" (Soul). Both went to a sage (I dont rememeber the name)and the sage ordered them to observe waters of nearby flowing river meditating upon the question- what is Soul- and come back to tell their individual inferrences. Virichan pondred and saw his face in the water. He thought that it is our face which is our soul, because when we annoint it, it looks beautiful and when we ignore it's upkeep it looks ugly. They both returned to the sage after a few days. Sage asked them if they could understand what is Soul. Virochan said, "yes; I got it. Soul is our own physique". Sage bid him goodbye. But Indra said. "Sir, I dont think that this physique is our Soul, beacuse it is apt to destruction while Soul is said to be eternal. Sage asked Indra to go for more penance untill after a very long time he could understand the Soul's Reality. The story is revealing. As long as we keep thinking objectively we are apt to be misguided. We must ask from our innerself as to ,"Who is there within me that raises such questions" In reality "I", "you", "we" are illusory qualifications for "ONE" and the same consciousness... I offer my apologies if I might have missed any point. I had read it years back probably in "Chandogya" Upnishad. Lastly here is a Meher Baba quote: "Spiritual practices are directed to KNOW what we actualy are, not what we THINK we are..." Guest guest
Thank you for the post with love, from KathyAccording to Swami Abhedananda, one of Sri Ramakrishna's disciples, children should grow up knowing that they are the Atman; this being the case, Brahma waited too long to teach Indra and Virochan the Truth. But who is to argue with Brahma? Guest guest
I for got to mention that same Indra was thenceforth made king of Devas.. and Virochan was made king of Asuras... the story goes like that. No doubt this story has only symbolic significance, but it tells that unless we come out of our self imposed preconditioning of mind.. we are not going to gain anything from mental gymnastic with love Satish
