You speak with the confidence of an old member, very well informed in Hindu literature. " Thank you dear Tatwamasi. first for your warm welcome and now for these compliments . I do not know how well veresed I am in hindu scriptures but what I know is just a drop in the ocean . but as you so beauifully put it in your post addressed to Sardar Saheb, to paraphrasepoe Robert Frost, there are miles and miles to go ... but the destination is the same for all of us whatever path/route we take - that of self- realization. until then, we are all spiritual seekers illumining one another . only a lit lamp can light another ! You state ... > I'm not sure where I got the idea but I thought your background was > Sikhism with curiosity about Hindusim! I was hoping to learm more > about Sikhism from one who "feels" a Sikh/Khalsa!! I must have made > a wrong assumption!! well, i am sorry if i gave you that impression. Maybe my id. i love bhangra and i love music - hence this name . also, i can speak punjabi and other languages. As far learning sikhism . your best bet is Sardar saheb himself . Then, you respond to my statement ... >> a challenging attitude wants to create doubts and sow seeds of > >discontent in the minds of believers. when you come back from your > >sabbatical, ask questions in a humble manner and for god's sake , > >do not ridicule Krishna or other hindu gods for they do not need > >your endorsement. > > You sound uncannily like our previous member who got angry at > sardarji for "insulting our Gods!!" Several of us posted our > response to that! I imagine you read them all! yes! i read chamundakijai's original post and all your carefully drafted posts - including pradeep, svcs , radhakutir and yours. As i have said in my post and i repeat now again, who are we to defend Gods ? HE is above and beyond THAT! I am not angry but what i am wondering is Radha kutir posted a very informative article by Sivananda on purna avatar of Lord krisha and sardarji complains nobody answered his question and then brings up additional topics for discussion like untouchability and the Sati custom. I personally thought every member here made an honest attempt to answer his question in a sincere manner to the best of their knowledge and ability. Tatwamasi you write in response to my remark > >>If you really want to understand Hinduism, first you must cultivate > >>the quality of a true sadhaka -that of "humility" or vinaya .. > > Does that mean newcomers, beginning students or those who are > studying for acedemic purposes who don't necesarily have sense of > belonging, cannot understand the Philosophy? Is our Philosophy such > that it can't stand on its own strength and needs a sense of loyalty > before it can be grasped? > > I'm not sure I can agree with you on that. As I pointed out earlier, > I feel it is this cultural attitude that leads to the > disenchantment of today's youth, specially those > who are used to debate and honest dialgoue and questioning. Or > alternatively they learn to parrot things, and get defensive when > having to protect that ignorance!!! this was not about newcomers or youth or the philosophy ! this was merely about the "attitude" - what i was talking was a different issue - that of "vinaya" a necessary qualification of a spiritual seeker . the OPENING verse in shatpadee stotra by adi shankara states .... Avinayam apanaya vishno amaya manah samaya vishaya mriga-trishnaam; Boota dayaam vistaaraya Taaraya samsaara saagaratah How do we describe the quality of **vinaya*** - while translating this word into english, the beauty and the real meaning of this word may be lost... Gentleness, humility, consideration for others, freedom from egoism , lack of arrogance etc - may somewhat describe all the qualities inherent in a person blessed with "vinaya" - Because of the emphasis on Vinaya, the _expression Vineya is used to denote a disciple. IN the Shatpadee Stotra, Sri Adi Sankara prays to God to remove Avinaya, evils like arrogance, which are opposite qualities to Vinaya. in the srimad bhagwat gita also (chapter 4, verse 34) it is stated tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya upadeksyanti te jnanam jnaninas tattva-darsinah Just try to learn the truth by approaching a Guru. Inquire from him submissively and render service unto him. The self-realized soul can impart knowledge unto you because he has seen the truth. that is how Arjuna approached Lord krishna - arjuna asked a lot of questions before he took up arms against his kith and kin. But at all times, he displayed a bhava of "vinaya" . let me ask s v c s this question. Should we not help the children of Sri LANKAN TIGERS just because one of their own assasinated india's prime minister Rajeev Gandhi ? Should we not help the children of Sikhs because two sikhs assasinated our prime minister Indira Gandhi? In sikhism , sat naam and sad guru are synonymous . in hinduism also, god's name (krishna) is to be taken only in a reverential manner . Namaskar !
