Srila Prabhupada is the supreme authority in all matters. The

disciple can do nothing without being authorized by the spiritual

master to do so. The order of the spiritual master is the life and

soul of the disciple. The disciple cannot even think of separating

his life from the order of his guru just as he would not think of

cutting off his own air supply. Our wish is to be purified by the

words emanating form his lotus mouth. Because he is fully surrendered

to Krishna, he is fully empowered to represent the Supreme Lord and

attract others back to Godhead, to the spiritual world. The pure

devotee spiritual master is a resident of Krishnaloka and has no

connection with the material world although he appears to move

through this world like its other inhabitants. It is like the moon

which appears to be caught in the branches of a tree.

The qualities of a great personality are mentioned throughout

the scriptures. No honest person has ever had difficulty seeing these

quailities in the person of our spiritual master and he is therefore

glorified throughout the three worlds as the perfect being. He is the

crown jewel of our entire sampradaya and the leader of all vaisnavas

on this planet for the duration of the golden age of Caitanya

Mahaprabhu.

To understand the greatness of our spiritual master is essential

to our understanding of how the sankirtana movement is meant to

continue to expand after the physical disappearance of His Divine

Grace. Srila Prabhupada said that this world requires many thousands

of gurus who will work to spread the teachings of Caitanya

Mahaprabhu. He said that the ISKCON society was created for the

purpose of allowing everyone to associate with sadhus. In other

words, he wanted all of his disciples to become qualified to act as

guru and preach Krishna consciousness in every town and village in

the world.

Acting as guru does not mean to accept the worship that is

reserved for Mahabhagavatas when one is not on that level. That is

cheating. A guru cannot be a cheater. He must be thoroughly honest.

Acting as guru means one is preaching Krishna consciousness, by

practice and by precept. It means one does not speak beyond what is

spoken by Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita. And who can act as guru?

Whoever is conversant with the science of Krishna. kiba vipra kiba

nyasi sudra kene naya/yei krsna-tattva-vetta sei guru haya.

The most famous example of guru is Krishna explaining the

message of Bhagavad-gita to Arjuna. Arjuna received transcendental

knowledge by which all sin is destroyed. That is called divya-jnana.

It was spoken to him personally by the Lord Himself, and if we read

the Bhagavad-gita with commentary by Krishna's pure devotee, it will

have the same effect as when spoken to Arjuna.

According to sastra, any vaisnava can be seen as guru, and any

vaisnava who is chanting the glories of the Lord is acting as guru.

Even one who is not quite on the liberated platform can act as guru

and acarya if he is a strict follower of the parampara.

Surrender to Krishna with humility and love.

By His Holiness Radhanath Swami Maharaj

Droplets from Nectarean Ocean,

Krishna says that as someone approaches Me, as someone surrenders to

Me, I reveal myself accordingly. If we surrender to Krishna with

humility and with love then this divine energy which all pervades

everything appears as Yoga maya. In other words this energy of the

Lord reveals Krishna to us everywhere and in everything. This energy

nourishes and increases our faith in devotion to Krishna at every

moment. This energy simply acts to increase our love and service to

the Lord. But when we have separate desires, when we want to misuse

our independence for our own personal selfish enjoyment, then that

same divine energy appears as Maha Maya, where through her all

pervading potency, she keeps Krishna covered from our vision. She

keeps us under the misconception that we are this mind, we're the

enjoyer. And she constantly makes incredibly wonderful arrangements

to induce us to serve our own senses, in forgetfulness of Krishna.
