Those who follow the lunar calendar observe Chandramana and those who follow the solar calendar observe Sauramana. This year Chandramana Ugadi is on 21-03-2004, and Sauramana Ugadi is on 13-04-2004. Hindus observe their new year in a simple way. They take a special bath applying oil to the body in the morning and perform pooja of their family deity. They keep the almanac in front of the deity when they do pooja. Then, they read the salient features of the new year from the almanac. Afterwards, they eat a small piece of neem leaf and jaggery mixture as a wish for a long life with full of health and prosperity. Sweets and other delicious foods are prepared and enjoyed. There is a cycle of sixty years called samvatsaras in the Hindu systems and each year is called by a name. The other features of each year are --- a)Two ayanas -- Uttarayana and Dakshinayana. Uttarayana denotes the movement of the Sun and the Moon towards the north. Dakshinayana denotes the movement of the Sun and the Moon towards the south. b)Six seasons in each samvathsara. c)twelve months in each samvathsara, d)two fortnights -- Suksla paksha and Krishna paksha in each month Sukla paksha denotes the movement of the moon from new moon day to full moon day. Krishna paksha denotes the movement of the moon from fullmoon day to new moon day. Hindus observe a number of festivals dedicating themselves to various rituals to lead a happy and prosperous life. The name of this New Year is TAARANA.
