Guest guest
Nityananda! Gauranga! Hare Krishna! All glories to Srila Prabhupada and all Vaisnavas. Please accept my humble obeisances and blessings. I pray that this meets you well and in the service and mercy of Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga. My Dearest Babaji; BG8:23- 8:28 "O best of the Bharatas, I shall now explain to you the different times at which, passing away from this world, the yogi does or does not come back. "Those who know the Supreme Brahman attain that Supreme by passing away from the world during the influence of the fiery god, in the light, at an auspicious moment of the day, during the fortnight of the waxing moon, or during the six months when the sun travels in the north. "The mystic who passes away from this world during the smoke, the night, the fortnight of the waning moon, or the six months when the sun passes to the south reaches the moon planet but again comes back. "According to Vedic opinion, there are two ways of passing from this world, one in light and one in darkness. When one passes in light, he does not come back; but when one passes in darkness, he returns. "Although the devotees know these two paths, O Arjuna, they are never bewildered. Therefore be always fixed in devotion. "A person who accepts the path of devotional service is not bereft of the results derived from studying the Vedas, performing austere sacrifices, giving charity or pursuing philosophical and fruitive activities. Simply by performing devotional service, he attains all these, and at the end he reaches the supreme eternal abode." The devotees of the Supreme Lord, who are totally surrendered to Sri Krishna do not consider when they leave their bodies or by what manner they die. They leave all these concerns in the capable hands of Sri Krishna and happily return to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But those that are not devotees of Sri Krishna, but follow other paths of self realization such as karma yoga, jnana yoga and hatha yoga must choose the appropriate time of death to assure whether or not they attain muksha or return to this material world. If the yogi is perfect, they themselves can choose the time and circumstances by which they leave this material body. But, if he is not perfect his success depends on passing away at a suitable time, he dies at the appropriate time by accident, not by his own choosing. The time of passing, such as when fire, light, day and the fortnight of the moon (ekadasi) are mentioned, one must understand that over all of these times there are various presiding deities who make arrangements for the passage of the soul. At the time of death, the mind carries one on the path to a new life. If one leaves the body at the appropriate time, whether by accident or by their own arrangement, it is possible for them to attain the impersonal brahmajyoti. Mystics that are advanced in controling their life airs, able to put into practice all science of the soul and body can arrange the time, place and circumstances to leave the body. Others have no control over this process, so they must rely of the favor of the demigods who make such arrangements to pass from this body at a suitable time so as to guarentee that they will not return to this material world and its sufferings. For the pure devotee of the Lord, those that take to Bhakti yoga, there is no fear of returning to this world. It does not matter when or under what circumstances they leave this body because all things are in accordance to the will of the Supreme Lord. In the Candogya Upanishad 5.10.3-5 the description of the migration of the eternal spirit soul is given for those who do not attain liberation at an auspicious time. It is stated, that if one is evil in this life, and atheist, lazy in the manner of spiritual attainments, one must transmigrate back through the evolution of the soul, starting over from the beginning as rain, plant life, etc. It also states that one may take a very inauspicious birth in that of a dog, lower animal where they are trapped in this cycle of birth and death. The devotee of the Lord is not to be disturbed by the different paths by which the spirit soul may leave this world, either by arrangement or by accident. We as devotees are to be firmly established in our service to Sri Krishna and chanting the Holy Names. One should not be overly concerned concerning the paths by which we leave, but to be confident that our lives are completely arranged for our own good by the Lord Himself. If one is dedicated in their devotional service, always engaged in devotional service, this will make one's path to the spiritual kingdom safe, certain and direct. In verse 27, the wrod "yoga-yukta" is significant in that it applies to one who is firm in yoga and constantly engaged in Krishna consciousness in all their activities. Sri Rupa Gosvamiji advises us; "anasaktasya vasayan yatharham upayunjata", "One should be unattached in all material affairs and do everything in Krishna consciousness." By the system of Bhakti yoga or yukta vairagya, one attains perfection through devotional service. In devotional service the devotee is not disturbed by the methods of death, nor its circumstances, whether by day, night, summer, winter, or phase of the moon, because they know that their passage to the Supreme Personality of Godhead is guaranteed by devotional service.
