Guest guest
Dear group, Seadna, you asked this: "....One question: is it possible to post the English translation of the Sanskrit for this puja? I like to know what I'm saying to Her. :)"Therefore i am happy to post it again with the English (most of the English anyway). I have also added a note at the end. Very short Kali puja: 1.)APPLYING TILAK Apply tilak to your forehead using the ring finger of your right hand 2.)SIPPING Sip water three times to purify yourself; one spoonful from the right palm after each of the following three mantras: aatma tattvaaya namah | obeisance to the Self element (higher self) vidyaa tattvaaya namah | obeisance to the Knowledge/Wisdom element shiva tattvaaya namah | obeisance to the Auspiciousness (pure consciousness) element now rinse your hands saying the following: hastau prakshaalya || i wash my hands 3.)PRAISING GANESHA praise Ganesha: om ganapataye namah || om obeisance to the Lord of Ganas (Shiva's hosts)(a name for Ganesha) 4.)PRAISING SPIRITUAL GUIDE Praise Guru (or Gurani): om gurave namah || om obeisance to Guru (om guranyai namah ||)(om obeisance to female Guru) (do this even if you don’t have one.) 5.)DHYANA/MEDITATION meditate on Kali in your heart. Now tell Her about it: om kaalyai namah | dhyaayaami || (put your hands together in a namaskar) om obeisance to Kali. i meditate on you 6.)AWAHANA/INVOCATION touching your heart with the palm of your left hand and the statue/picture/image of Kali with the little finger of your right hand, imagine Kali enters into the image (do not imagine She leaves the heart, rather She is transmitted rather like a flame so as to dwell equally in the image and the heart.) whilst saying the following mantra: kaaliiM aawaahayaami || Kali i invoke you (or) i invoke Kali 7.)GANDHA/OFFERING SCENTED MATERIAL/S with the ring finger of your right hand, place gandha (consisting of a paste of fine red ochre powder and rose water; alternatively use red sandalwood paste, or otherwise any perfume, fragrance, essential oil etc.) on Her heart or alternatively apply as a tilak (dot) on Her forehead. Say the following: om kaalyai namah | gandhaM samarpayaami ||om obeisance to Kali. i am offering fragrance 8.)PUSPANI/OFFERING FLOWERS offer flowers, either whole or petals, at Her feet. (if offering only a single flower, replace the plural word "pushhpaani" with the singular word "pushhpaM"). say the following while offering: om kaalyai namah | pushhpaani samarpayaami ||om obeisance to Kali. i am offering flowers 9.)DHUUP/OFFERING INCENSE light an incense stick and wave it three times in a clockwise circle in front of Her, saying the mantra below: om kaalyai namah | dhuupaM aaghraapayaami ||om obeisance to Kali. i am offering (roughly translated) incense Then set the incense stick towards Her left side and leave it there. 10.)ARATI/WAVING OF LIGHT light some camphor in a camphor lamp (or just in a plate) and wave it just like you did with the incense, except wave it five times instead of three. Say the mantra below for this: om kaalyai namah | karpuura niiraajanaM darshayaami ||om obeisance to Kali. i am showing camphor arati (roughly translated) Then put the lamp down, and pass your right hand briefly over the flame. Then cover your eyes with the same hand to receive the blessing. 11.)JAPA/RECITATION OF MANTRA (OPTIONAL) (you can do some japa now if you like) 12.)PRARTHANA/OFFERING OF PRAYERS now you can pray asking for things (only if you wish to do so), either aloud or by imagining them mentally. Also say sorry three times for any imperfections in the worship: kshamasva parameshvari | kshamasva parameshvari | kshamasva parameshvari || forgive me Parameshwari (x3) om kaalyai namah | praarthanaaM samarpayaami ||om obeisance to Kali. i am offering prayer (be sure to pronounce the T's and H's (as in praarthanaam) separately like "hot-head" rather than TH as in "thing".) 13.)DISMISSAL Finally comes the dismissal/goodbye. offer some flowers or petals, saying: kaaliiM yathaasthaanam prathishtaa-payaami ||(difficult for me to translate this with clarity, so i'm not going to hazard it.This step is like the counterpart to the initial invocation though) then take one of the offered petals and smell it, imagining Kali is returning back into your heart this way (or instead you can touch the idol and then touch your heart). Note: Offer the various things with your right hand if you can, and if it is convenient keep the fingers of your left hand touching your right arm (round about the elbow/forearm) as you offer each item. I don't know the reason for this; it could just be a superstition but I usually do it unless I need the left hand to hold the flower basket or something or for ringing the bell. By the way you can ring a bell (with your left hand) whilst showing the camphor arati (with your right) if you like. Jai Ma Kali!!!
