SaptaMatrikas and Matrikas

I am in search for information about the SaptaMatrikas and Matrikas.

On this website

found some interesting information but I am not sure if that is correct or where

this concept is from.

Here is written:

The Hindu scholar Devdutt Pattanaik notes that the Seven Mothers are the

"handmaidens of Chandi (Durga or Parvati), Who "declared Her seven handmaidens

would be worshipped as virgin mothers."

Does someone if that is true and which scripture states that?

I ask because never before have I come along that concept.
