[divyabhakti] Photos of Sculptures of Devi

Durga

Ambika Mata temple, Jagat Other images of Durga from this temple: 1. (with bell;

Mahisha in bull form) 2. (with bow; pulling out Mahisha) 3. (with snake;

Mahisha, with club, in human form)

Sarasvati

Ambika Mata temple, Jagat Brahma's wife here carries a water-pot (lower left

hand), a vina (upper left hand), and a fragmentary attribute, possibly another

vina (upper right hand). Although the water-pot is an attribute of Brahma, it

is also an independent attribute of Sarasvati in her older aspect as a river

goddess. (Brahma's book is also an independent attribute of Sarasvati, in her

role as goddess of learning.) Because Sarasvati and Brahma share several

attributes in common, it is not always easy to distinguish Sarasvati from

Brahmani, the female form of Brahma

Sarasvati

Keshava Temple, Somnathpur Sarasvati plays the vina; additional arms bear a

staff (middle right arm), rosary (upper right arm), and book (upper left arm).

The goddess's fingers and thumbs are heavily beringed. Her vina and book, the

latter usually interpreted as a copy of the Vedas, establishes Sarasvati as

goddess of poetry and the arts.

Lakshmi

Kailasanatha Temple, Ellora Lakshmi is lustrated by elephants in this large

panel facing the gateway, just inside the temple. As elsewhere at Ellora, the

sculptures appear unfinished because their fine details were completed in

plaster, which has long since fallen off.
