Guest guest
Durga Navaratri (the Nine Nights of Durga) is NOT determined by the Autumn Equinox. It begins on the New Moon, and continues for nine days, in the Hindu month of Ashwinam (the dates this year -- 2004 -- are from October 14 through October 22). The celebration is over Durga's defeat of the Buffalo Demon. There are nine aspects of Durga, and these are invoked in a particular order on each day. Also the nine nights are grouped in sets of three. The first three days are devoted to cleaning and purifying in the name of Ma Kali. The second three days are devoted to visiting relatives and exchanging gifts in the name of Ma Lakshmi. The last three days are devoted to study, and consecrating one's working tools, in the name of Ma Sarasvati. There is a lesser Navaratri in the Springtime, devoted to Durga's helping Lord Rama win the war against Ravana. -- Len/ Kalipadma On Thu, 09 Sep 2004 06:54:05 -0000 "bluebastt" <bluebastt writes: > Can anyone give me information on Nine Nights Durga Puja? Guest guest
I am confused on the actual beginnings of Navaratri. I have read that sometimes it begins at the end of september around the 26th and goes into october. Is it based the particular number of new moon? It can sometimes begin in september and sometimes in october, i am confused, please enlighten me! kadesh Kali_Ma, kalipadma@j... wrote: > > Durga Navaratri (the Nine Nights of Durga) is NOT determined by the > Autumn Equinox. Guest guest
If you look at a (Gregorian) calendar which lists the Moon's phases, and compare different years, you will note that the New Moon's date changes every year. Navaratri begins with the New Moon in late September or early October, but the exact date changes from year to year. May Ma Kali slip Her tongue into your ear, and lick the confusion from your mind. -- Len/ Kalipadma On Fri, 10 Sep 2004 06:04:21 -0000 "bluebastt" <bluebastt writes: > > I am confused on the actual beginnings of Navaratri.
