Dearest Acharya,

adiyen ramanuja dasaha!

We are blessed to receive Upanishad Upadesams.

The following questions came to our mind:

Q1) We have three duties (runams) Pithru, Rushi, Deva

accumulated as our existance in human forms.

How can we totally become free from all the runams?

Or only after separation from this body can this be

achieved?

Q2) Are these 'Runams' and 'Vasana' related?

How can we totally get rid of Poorva janma Vasanas

as they are popularly called?

Q3) If we have to do everything with 'karma phala tyaga'

and if we are doing things to fulfil these runams what

should we do?

Q4) Why did Nachiketas go to Yama after he died and

not to Indra or to Srimannarayana?

Q5) What is the path of the soul after death?

Q6) Where does Yama live? How far is his abode?

How does he look?

Q7) Srivaru mentioned that Nachiketas went in through

a seperate special door and had to wait for "three" days

and when Yama appeared he gave him "three" boons.

What is the significance of "three"?

I pray that the ignorance accumulated be dispelled by

Srivaru's krupa kataksham.

Jai Srimannarayana

ANS: After giving up the body nothing can be done,

except experiencing the results ofthe karmas. Whatever

is to be done, must be done here itself, while in the

body. 1) surrenderance to the Lotus Feet of

Lakshminarayana through a right A:cha:rya. This burns

all the karma va:sana:s to ashes. Anda:l said about

this in her pa:suram= "Po:ya pizhaiyum puhudaruvan

ninranavum thi:yinil thu:sahum".

This is only the way to get rid of all the karmas.

Then too, you need to do something.

1.Pitru runam= get good children, who can practice

righteous things, offer tharpanas (alms to them)&

follow what they were doing in the service of God.

2. Rishi runam = practice the rules they have laid.

Read their works and understand them. Offer tarpana:s

to them also. Encourage the people who follow the

teaching of the rishis. preserve their works by

printing them the preserving them.

3. Deva runam = By worshiping God and telling about

Him to others and by dedicating all our activities to

Him, we can get rid of this runam.

> Q2) Are these 'Runams' and 'Vasana' related?

ANS= Runas are different and also the Va:sanas.

Va:sanas are imprints in the Manas engraved since

somany births. Runas are only a part of the whole

Va:sanams. And they are related to the body's

activity. Whereas Va:sanas work on the mind, intellect

and also with the soul.

> Q3) If we have to do everything with 'karma phala tyaga'

> and if we are doing things to fulfil these runams what

> should we do?

ANS= The reply was already there.

=====

> Q4) Why did Nachiketas go to Yama after he died and

> not to Indra or to Srimannarayana?

ANS= Because his father dedicated him to only

Yamadharma Ra:ja, but not to others. So he went to

that abode only.

=========

> Q5) What is the path of the soul after death?

ANS= There are two paths explained by Lord Krishna in

8th Chapter of Bhagavad Gita. 1. White path, which

takes the soul to the Divine abode, from where that

soul need not come back with karma. 2. Black path,

which takes the soul to abodes to experience karmas

and brings back to this world to get another body, may

be in any form, not necessarily human form.

3. But in upanishads another path was also described

that is "ya:mya:di path" by travelling through which

the soul goes to Hells, "narakalo:kas" to experience

the sins.

> Q6) Where does Yama live? How far is his abode?

> How does he look?

ANS= unless one goes and counts the distance, we

cannot say that, for we did not go there and we do not

want to go there also. Yama appears, very devotes, it

seems, according to Kathho:panishad. Actually, people

who have experienced, did not inform that you see!

> Q7) Srivaru mentioned that Nachiketas went in through

> a seperate special door and had to wait for "three"

> days and when Yama appeared he gave him "three" boons.

> What is the significance of "three"?

ANS = Yama gave three boons because, the boy stayed

there for 3 days without food and so 3 sins might be

imposed on him, to avoid them he gave 3 boons. Next

having known that this boy is really good, Yama

thought that this boy deffinitely asks to get relieve

from 3 runas. so he thought to give 3 boons. THere may

be other reasons too.
