jithakro:dha –

 

SriRamachandra showed through his practice

what we should learn. One can have anger

but he should not be under its control

instead have it under his control. Hence

sage Valmiki while questioning Narada did

not ask for ‘a person who has no anger’

but asked for ‘one who had conquered anger’.

Valmiki ends his question by asking, “who

is the person whose wrath in the battle

field trembles even the devathas?”

 

Sriramachandra proves that humanity requires

commanding anger when necessary and having

it at total control. He summons anger only

when the situation demands. That is why it

is said iSriRamayana:

 

“kro:dha ma:ha:rayat”

“Srirama gets anger at his own will”.

 

This is evident from the words of

Sriramachandra, when he is angry. An

ordinary person, when angry forgets what

can be uttered and what cannot be. But

Srirama is never harsh in his words even

when he is angry.

 

Sugri:va, had been enjoying his life with

his wives and his newly acquired kingdom

for four months and completely forgot his

promise to Sriramachandra that he would

search for Seetha. The rainy season had

passed off and the sarath season had

arrived but Sugri:va did not remember his

word. Srirama was seized with the pangs of

separation from his wife. He wanted to

send Lakshmana to Sugri:va to remind him

of his words. He told Lakshmana to go to

Kishkinda and tell Sugri:va -

 

“nacha sankuchithaha pantha:ha ye:na

va:li: hatho: gathaha|

samaye: thishtta sugri:va ma: va:li

patha manvaga:ha ||”

 

Srrirama told Lakshmana to inform Sugri:va -

“Hey Sugri:va, the way Va:li was sent is

still open. You bind to your words. Keep

up the promise made. Don’t follow Va:li’s

path.”

 

Srirama spoke these words in anger.and

Srirama really meant “ tell Sugri:va that

I’ll kill him for not keeping his promise

of searching for Seetha.”. These harsh

words were expressed by Srirama softly.

Hence it can be said that anger was under

his control. That is the reason Va:lmiki

says “kro:dha ma:ha:rayath”. But at the

same time even his closest could never

find out that he was not angry but he

temporarily was inviting anger. His anger

was terrifying. Even the devathas who

were close to him were frightened of his

ire in the battle field. This has been

asked by Valmiki,

 

“kasyabhibhyathi de:va:scha

ja:tha ro:shasya samyuge:”

 

Every human being should have this quality.

One who can control anger can be called a

human being. Srirama never got angry on

Mandhara who was responsible for the loss

of kingdom or on Kaikeyi who sought a

boon that he should not be given the

kingdom. He never sought revenge on them.

He discouraged Lakshmana from punishing

them.
