Narada continues,

 

‘rakshitha: jeevalo:kasya, dharmasya parirakshitha: |

rakshitha: svasyadharmasya, svajanasya rakshitha: ||

 

Sri Rama’s quality as ‘rakshaka’(protector) is presented

here.This is an important quality for any human being.

One’s responsibility should not be limited to protecting

himself and satisfying his day to day needs. One has to

help his fellow beings in the society trying to eliminate

the hindrances in their way and solving their problems

to the best of one’s ability and provide solace to them.

The purpose of every being is living for the sake of

‘others’,not for the sake of self.

 

The entire universe is ‘Bhagavada:thmakam’. One has to

follow one’s dharma (swadharma) and also see

that those within their sphere of influence abide by the

principles of Dharma.Generally man is always more

inclined to compel others to follow Dharma though he doesn't

practice it himself. It is more important to focus on

practice of Swa-dharma.

SriRama’s nature is to practise his dharma and facilitate

others to practice their Dharma too.

 

 

Some people though they protect the whole world are

negligent of their own people. But SriRama’s nature is to

protect the people in the world without neglecting his

own. This principle is to be followed by one and all. One

should lead one’s life doing ‘dharmarakshana’,

‘swadharma rakshana’, ‘jeevalo:ka rakshana’ and ‘svajana

rakshana'.

 

 

It is Bhagavan's nature also to do these four types

of ‘rakshana’. He is the ‘Antharya:mi’ in all the

‘jeeva:s’ and initiates them to strive to achieve

whatever they want and gives them strength to overcome

the obstacles they face. Bhagavan is present in those

who believe Him and He protects their identity. Those who

accept Him as the means and the goal are His ‘svajana’.

 

Bhagvan takes care of disbelievers also by permeating

within their self without their knowledge. He personally

rescues those who believe in Him.

 

Bhagavan’s attribute is ‘rakshakathvam’. His name is ‘Aa’

It means one who ‘protects’.

This letter ‘aa’ has come from the ‘dhathu’

‘avarakshane:’ and hence the meaning ‘one who protects’.

It is all entirely His business to do the ‘srushti,

sthithi and laya’ and to be in the ‘jeevas’ directing them

and awarding them the ‘moksha’.Besides these, doing

‘dharma rakshana’ is also His duty.For that purpose He

gave the Vedas; the procedures to do yagna yagas etc. and

the required materials for their performance; the Rishis

for their initiation and kings who would take care of

those Rishis. He undertakes ‘sarana:gatha rakshana’ as

dharma. So Bhagavan’s SVADHARMA is ‘sarana:gatha rakshana’.

 

‘Bhagavathsvabha:vam’ is to take care of those who come

to Him as the ultimate ‘upa:ya’. Thus Bhagwan incarnates

as Rama and does the ‘rakshana’ as a duty.

 

This sloka occurs thrice in SreeRamayanam. So this is

regarded as a very prominent Sloka.
