Namaste!

I hope this is not an inappropriate question.

In another I am part of, the question

was asked about how much the Tamil language is

currently used in Sri Vaisnava temples.

If anyone can help us with this information, it

will be most appreciated.

Dear Mark,

Tamil is used extensively in SriVaishnava homes and temples, sometimes

interspersed along with Sanskrit, and sometimes independently. Indeed,

SriVaishnavism is known as ubhaya veda:nta, because both in philosophy and in

practice, it is a unique combination of Veda/ Veda:nta and the Tamil

mysticism of twelve remarkable Saints, the A:zhwa:rs (Tamil: lit. "one who

dives deep", in reference to their "drowning" in devotion for the Lord).

Interestingly, our Acha:ryas have proven that the mystical Tamil verses of

these saints, which are known collectively as na:la:yira divya prabhandam,

reflect and clarify the very same teachings that are found in the Ve:das;

thus, making the Tamil verses on par with the Ve:das. However, since they

are in a vernacular language, the chants of the prabhandam are available for

recitation and understanding by everyone, irrespective of race, caste or

gender. So, in one way, they can be regarded to be "superior" to the Vedas

in terms of their clarity and accessibility.

I hope this helps as an introduction.

A note of caution:

It is important to recite the Tamil verses in na:la:yira divya

prabhandam with as much sanctitity as one would chant the Vedas and

with as much stress on correct pronunciation and indentation to keep

the meanings as the Azhwaars meant them to be. Recently there was a

mail in another list on how particular verses were chanted wrongly

and the disastrous meanings resulting from such wrong chanting of the

same. adiyen believes that na:la:yira divya prabhandam is to be

learnt from an Acharyan or someone who is proficient in Tamil

recitation just as the Vedas are to be learnt from one who is

proficient in the same.
