Srimathe: Ramanujayanamaha!!

Jeeyar Thiruvadigale SaraNam!!

On reaching the riverbanks of Thamasa, delighted by the enchanting sight of the

river waters, spoke thus Valmiki to his disciple, “Bharadwa:ja:! Keep that

‘kalasa’ on the ground. Give me my 'valkalam' (jute loin-cloth) to take bath. I

will take bath here in this river.” He gave his guru the 'valkalam'. Valmiki is

‘jithe:ndriya’. He had conquered the senses. He had no longing for ‘vishaya

darSanam’. But in those vast woods witnessing the Lord’s great craftsmanship, he

walked along watching the woods. There he saw a pair of ‘krouncha’ birds moving

together happily enjoying each other’s company.

There came a hunter. He is adept at doing evil. Not even caring the presence of

the ‘muni’ there, the hunter whose nature is just hating the animals, killed

one of them, the male krouncha bird. It fell to the ground whirling. It was

drenched in blood. Seeing its mate at the door of death, the female bird started

waling piteously. The rishi was a ‘dharma:thma’. He felt the pain of the shot of

that arrow and the female bird’s grief as if it hurt his body itself. Seeing the

wailing bird he spontaneously out poured thus:

“ma: niSha:da prathishtta:m thvam, agamaha Sa:Svathi: ssama:ha |

yath krouncha midhuna:de:kam, avadhi:h ka:mamo:hithaha ||”

‘Nisha:da: ! (hunter!) You killed the male bird engaged in making love in the

krouncha bird pair. So may you not last long in this world!’

These words came out unintentionally from Valmiki. He was a realized soul having

full control on his emotions. How come he was overcome by this grief and cursed

the hunter? Is it right? – We get these doubts!
