Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Saranam!

Srimathe Ramanujayanamaha!!

Valmiki maharshi having decided to pen Sri Ramayanam, did a:chamanam and sat on

the mat of darbha grass whose ends were eastward and started composing it. As

he decided in his mind and commenced his work, the story of Rama in its entirety

appeared before his mind’s eye clearly.

He restricted it to twenty four thousand slokas. There are five hundred sargas

and six ka:nda:s. He later authored ‘Uttara Ka:nda’ also. When Valmiki was

thinking who could learn it and utilise it, the boys in the munis’ attire, great

singers and the sons of the king, Kusa and Lava came and touched his feet and

paid obeisance to him. They were Sri Rama’s children staying with their mother

Sitha in the asram. They were brilliant, well versed in the Vedas and Valmiki

taught them Sri Ramayana to make the essence of Vedas clear to them. The whole

of Ramayana expounds the story of Sitha. So Valmiki kept ‘Sitha’s story’ or

‘Poulasthya vadha’ as the main story line and composed Ramayan.

It had been written to be read and to be sung as well. The sweetness available

in this kavya is not present in any other work. It is fit to be sung in

‘dhritha’ ‘madhya’ and ‘vilamba’ gathis It can be very well played on Veena. It

consists of the ‘saptha jathis’. It is pleasant - packed with all the ‘nava

rasas’ like the ‘karunarasa Sringara rasa etc.

Third sarga tatva deepika concluded.......

Jaisrimannarayana!!

Ramanujamma Mudumbai, Ramanuja dasi.
