Srimathe Ramanujayanamaha!

Jeeyar Thiruvadigale saranam!!

After their first performance in the hermitage, once those two children Lava and

Kusa were singing and walking through the streets and king’s ways in Ayodhya.

Sri Rama heard them and fetched them into his palace. They were honoured well.

Sri Rama seated on a gold throne in the court hall among the ministers with his

brothers started listening to Sri Ramayan.

Sri Rama seeing those two charming brothers Lava and Kusha told his three

brothers, “These divinely glowing children are singing. Let us listen to them”,

and encouraged them to sing. They started singing melodiously and rhythmically.

The listeners’ bodies and hearts were enthralled when they listened to them.

“Listening to the singing of Lava and Kusa who are great hermits in the saintly

attire with the royal features, would be beneficial even to me and so you all

listen to this glorious legend”, thus Sri Rama encouraged all the courtiers to

listen to them.

They both started singing in the method of ‘maarga’. In music there are two

methods – daesi and maarga. The maarga type of music is famous through out while

daesi is popular only in particular areas and hence all may not be knowing it.

Sri Rama was sitting on his throne and listening to them. He was fascinated by

their singing, got up from his throne and slowly without disturbing the

courtiers reached the middle of the durbar. The reason for doing so is said to

be, ‘bubhu:shaa’. It means – the desire to experience. He wanted to hear it by

being nearer to it so that his ears will be satisfied. Or it is ‘bhavithum

ichcha: bubhu:shaa’ - his desire to be himself.

Wishing that his ‘swaruupam’ should not be distorted and his entity should not

be spoiled he became enthused to listen to Sitha’s story. We come to know from

this - that human beings who aspire to live as true humans with their a:thma

swarupam in proper state should listen to ‘Sitha charithram’.

To be continued…….

Jaisrimannarayana!
