srimathe ramanujaya namaha! srimathe narayanaya namaha! jai srimananrayana.

By churning the milk ocean, which was full of boats with the rishis who came to

witness the samudra madhanam, He became Madhava by bearing Mahalakshmi. He

became Keshava too by bearing Brahma and Rudra with His beautiful locks. The

gopikas whose faces were resplendent like the moon with glee, wearing wonderful

ornaments approached and sang Lord Krishna’s glories that time in Dwaparayuga

and could fetch rains for the people there. A jewel of place on the earth called

‘Villiputtur’ - there lives Sri Vishnuchitthas’s dear daughter Sri Godadevi who

made a garland of sweet pa:sura:s and offered to Sriyahpathi.

Thiruppavai is a supreme jewel in the philosophical literature. This is the

greatest prabandham. It is the seedling of the whole Vedas. Those who do not

learn this are at a loss in life and are a burden to the earth.

Goda devi offered two types of garlands to Swami; one a garland of flowers which

she offered as uchchishta and Swami accepted gladly asking for the same alone;

another was a garland of ‘pasurams’. She sang all her experiences as songs. This

is also her ‘mukhauchchishtam’ only. Lord accepted those songs and to prove them

right He married Godadevi, appeared in human form, being in the Archa:mu:rthi as

Lord Ranganatha in Srirangakshetram and took her into Him. That is why there are

no exaggerations or conflicts or wasteful descriptions. We should know the

meaning carefully and believe.

In this last pasura Andal is giving the benefit of memorizing this prabandha.

She had given the benefit of performing this vratha in the 3rd pasura itself.

Now she is explaining the benefit of just learning this prabandha.

Gopikas performed this vrata for Lord Krishna and they achieved their goal.

Andal had followed them to reach SriRanganatha and achieved the goal in a

wonderful manner better than the gopikas. Now there is no need to take that much

trouble. If we read these it is enough. We can attain a better result – says

Andal. This had been sung for Lord Krishna. Once a great effort, ‘Kshi:ra

sa:gara madhanam’, . was made by Him, to get back Sri Lakshmi who went away from

Him and hid in the ocean. That day He became one as the ‘Kurma’ under the

mountain, as one in the mountain to protect it from crushing down, as one in the

devathas to give them strength, in the asuras in so many rupas , in the head of

Vasuki He took one form and in its tail one form, to keep the Mandhara mountain

in its position He took one form in the sky – thus He took innumerable forms

and gave the celestials the ‘amrutha’ they wanted and got Sri Lakshmi for

Himself and became ‘Ma:dhava’. Madhava means – Lakshmina:dha. That day when he

churned the ocean how His glorious hair locks became loose and spread on his

forehead! When his delicate beautiful hair was blowing in the air thus, He

looked magnificent. All those fortunate who had His darshan that time did not

think that He might catch evil eye.

During the ‘saagaramadhanam’ our A:ndaal visualized a wonder what

Vyaasabhagavaan had seen. There were many wooden boats also in the ocean. Swami

churned without disturbing the boats. That ocean is this samsaara; the boats are

the bodies. Those in them were the rishies who came to sing mangalam to Swami.

He had relieved their ‘srama’. In this samsara those who wish to sing mangalam

for Him experiencing His kalyana gunas, He takes care that the ocean waves do

not touch them. He along with the Divine Mother rescues us all.

more later,

andal divya thiruvadigale saranam, adiyen ramanuja dasaha,

jai srimannarayana!
