In Ayodhya the gateways and the archways were beautiful to look at. The shops

were specially arranged in the wide central area. All types of machinery and

weaponry was installed. There were many craftsmen like painters and sculptors.

There were ‘suutha’ (eulogists) and maagadhas (panegurists) to wake up the kings

and to sing their glories. There were multistoried buildings with tall flag

posts (dhvaja) on top. The weapons called ‘Sathaghni’ were installed at various

places to combat the enemies. Thus, there was some speciality in the

construction of Ayodhya. In those days the people were interested in fine arts

and even the ladies used to take part in dramas and plays and formed into

associations. There were many gardens and mango orchards in the city. It was

surrounded by a big fort wall on all sides and this again was surrounded by a

canal of immeasurable depth and was unapproachable for the enemies. Horses,

elephants, camels and cows were in plenty there. The provincial kings were

coming there for trading purposes. Those kings who were coming to pay taxes to

the king used to form unions. Businessmen were coming from far and wide to the

city. Ayodhya was wonderful with perfectly laid out road system, - eight wide

roads on each side intersecting each other just like the game board of chess

(ashtapadi). The houses named as ‘vima:na:s’ were situated beside one another.

The whole city was built on a leveled land. It was flourishing with abundant

food grains. Drinking water as sweet as sugar cane juice was available

everywhere. In that city the sounds of musical instruments like dumdubhis,

mridangams, veenas and the panavas were heard continuously.
