nArasimha vapuhu (star-aSwini) = The One who has the narasimha form. Poem :

Siriya TirumaDal - 43, 44, 45 (of SrI Tirumangai ALwAr) Brief Interpretation :

HiraNyakaShipu who considered himself as Brahma died a ghastly death. He

couldn’t protect his body. Is he the Brahma then?.

The one who broke open the pillar and thrashed that HiraNya is the real Brahma.

That day, He roared and proclaimed to one and all that He is the Lion among all

and He is the indweller of all. He displayed His all protective power and mad

love for His devotees.

nAra – Amongst the AtmAs

simha – The pre-eminent one

vapuhu – who shines with such a splendid divine form.

Poem in English :

1) The fighting HiraNya with the long spear.

2) He tore that HiraNyA’s body with His sharp and sturdy nails

3) And wore the intestines as a garland over His chest, which is the auspicious

abode of mother lakShmi.

4) He knocked down the blood smeared arms of the HiraNya who lay bleeding

profusely.

5) And flourished rapidly in His roaring nrusimha form.

Detailed Interpretation :

1) Of the fighting HiryaNya with the long spear : HiraNya considered himself

as the Brahma and all others as totally insignificant. This thought was his

spear. He used to wage a war with it against everyone who challenged his

supremacy.

2) He tore such HiraNyA’s body with strong & sturdy nails : Those who consider

themselves as Brahma require such a thought (such a weapon) to defend their

standpoint. Of what necessity is any such weapon to the One who is naturally

powerful; who is the epitome of all the auspicious qualities. He pounced upon

HiraNya and teared him apart with just His nails.

3) And wore the intestines as a garland over His chest : His chest is the

auspicious abode of mother LakShmi. He decorated such a chest with the entrails

of HiraNyakaShipu. This was purely due to the fact that HiraNyakashipu was

related to His ardent devotee, PrahlAda. He adorns Himself with anything that

has an association with His devotees and gives it a position equal to our mother

SrI. This act exemplifies His boundless love towards His devotees.

4) He knocked down the blood smeared arms of the HiraNya who lay bleeding

profusely : Those hands of HiraNya inflicted pain on many bhAgavatAs,

over-powered many women and forced them to surrender to him. He knocked them

down with an aggrieved heart as they were not instrumental in carrying out His

service and were instead involved in unpardonable acts.

4) And flourished in His roaring Nrusimha avatAram : His roar vividly

promulgates the praNavArdham. “I am your protector. You are not the protector.

When you cannot safeguard yourself, How come you pose as the protector of all

others?. Are you the Brahma?. Are you that supreme truth?.I am that Brahma, that

supreme truth. Know me as the all protector, as the indweller - the supreme

controller.” Lord Nrusimha flourished in each and every department, each and

every quality. HiraNya was muffled into a nothing.

This was one of the most celebrated incarnations of the Lord. He displayed in an

astounding manner, His all protective prowess, His mad Love for His devotees and

the truth of He being the inner controller of all.

He is the one with inimitable qualities and divine form and He is the greatest

of all the nArams (nArasimha vapuhu).
