Jai Sriman Narayana!

Recently, there has been a lot of discussion, in a news group, regarding the

nama "Shunya" in Vishnu Sahasranamavali. I would like to add the

following (without repeating what has been said):

Shunya also referes to vacuum, and it is a great potency of Lord Sriman

Narayana. Shunya (vacuum) can be considered as opposite to Bala (force,

pressure). He has shown this in two instances during Sri Krishna avatharam.

1. When there was a "dhAvAgni" or greta fire in Brindavana forest, Sri

Krishna extinguished it by simply succing the fire into himself. This great

vacuum or suction capabaility can be referred to as Shunya.

2. Again during Sri krishna AvathAram, when He was fighting with Shiva (Shiva

was fighting on behalf of Banasura), Sri Krishna released the Vishnu-jwara in

response to Shiva's Shiva-jwara. The Vishnu-jwara is extreme cold, as opposed to

the Shiva-jwara which is extrem hot. Ofcourse the Vishnu-jwara put down the

Shiva-jwara. The Vishnu=jwara is extrem cold. It is well known that temperature

reduces with pressure. Extreme cold can result from vacuum Shunya. Thus, Lord

has used the devine quality "shunya" (perfect vacuum) to put down the Shiva

jwaram.

3. At the time of dissolution, all the jivas and universes decrease in size (to

that of a small andam or ball) enter Him with great acceleration. He makes use

of his devine shunya (or vacuum) quality to compress the universes and succ in

to His mouth. Sri Markendeya Maha Muni has withnessed that the Lord in a the

form of a tiny boy is lying down on a vata-pathra and inside Him, Markandeya

could see all the worlds in His tiny belly. Srimath Bhagavatham says that

Markandeya (along with the universe) was spraled into His mouth. Recently,

scientists have discovered that stars and galaxies toward the center of the

universse, are shrinking to small size and are swirling into a small balck hole.

Therefore, He is called shunya.

4. Of course, He does not have any bad qualities, therefore, He can be cosidered

as Shunya (shunya of bad qualities).

5. He makes papa-shunyam of His devotees. Shritha jana papa-shunyaka ithi

Shunya. No one else can completely remove the pApam. Thereforem He can be called

as Shunya

6. When water has to flow it has to either have pressure or balam, or there

should be vacuum on the other side. In order to get-rdi of this material

sambandam and go to Moksham, the jivas should have enough (anantha or infinite)

tapobalam and samskara balam, etc. However, for us the prapannas, who have no

tapo balam, gnana balam, etc, he transports us to Sri Vaikuntam using a Shunya

(vacuum force). Therefore, He can be considered as Shunya.

7. The universe is shrinking and expanding. It is expanding becoming anantham,

and when it shrinks becomes sukshmam with the help of Shunya Shakthi.

8. The most imporatnt is that to reach Him, we have do shunyam or nothing. He

has to reaveal Himself. In order to cross the ocean of samsara, the prapanna has

to do nothing (Shunyam). In day to day life, we have to give everthing upo to

Him and do not plan anthing (shunyam). Therefore He is called Shunya.

9. When we become prapannas, our bharam is shunyam, therefore, he can be called

as Shunya.

In conclusion, SHUNYA is a devine quality (Kalyana Gunam) of Lord Sriman

Narayana, and is one of His infinite Kalyana Gunas.

With all glories to ZLord Sri Venkateswara, I remain,

Sincerely

Narender P. Reddy

Shunya is ZERO not "nothingness" - zero contains within it all the possibilities

of manifestation or non-manifestation. From zero we can create positive numbers

or negative numbers. Therefore not only in Vishnu-sahasranama also in

Pancharatra Agama it has been declared that Lord Vishnu is SHUNYA meaning that

all potential for transformation and non-transformation lie within Him alone.

Dear Sri Reddy Garu,

Sri Parasara Bhatta, illustrious son of Sri Kuranatha and Acharya of Nanjeeyar,

has written a commentary in Sanskrit on Sri Vishnu Sahasranama under the title,

Bhagavad Guna Darpanam. In that commentary, he explains Sunya as one who is free

of sins. This approximates to one of your explanations: "4.Of course, He does

not have any bad qualities, therefore, He can be cosidered as Shunya (shunya of

bad qualities"
