Guest guest
Dear Gopalan, People exclusively belonging to atharva veda (whose svaveda is atharva) are extremely rare. However, there are dwivedi/trivedi smartas who study this veda. >From charaNavyUha, there seems to be 9 branches of this veda. They are paippalAda, stauda, mauda, shaunakIya, jAjala, jalada, brahmavada, devadarsh and chAraNavidyA. Currently only shaunakIya shAkhA is available with accents. Paippalada shAkhA is partly revived in orissa but all the accents are lost. The contents of the vedas can be divided into mantras (almost always in samhitas) and brAhmaNas (containing vidhi - application of mantras and arthavAda - meaning of the mantras & rituals). The vulgate atharva veda samhita contain about 6000 mantras in 20 books. Paippalada samhita contain about 25% more mantras.
