Jai Sriman Narayana,

This is a question on the sthala puranam of Triambakeshwar. Pardon me if this

question is not so important, but I am always drawn towards the sthala puranams

of the famous temples and want to find out the details. Triambakeshwar is a very

nice temple - similar in architecture to Somnath temple. I liked it very much.

It was a Monday - so there was a heavy rush and lots of chantings were happening

in the temple. The main shrine has 3 lingas - depicting Brahma, Vishnu and

Mahesh it seems. Only men are allowed to touch them and make a wish. (And thats

why the name triambakeshwar). Another reason (other than the reason of trinity

residing together) is that triambakeshwar represents the 3 aspects - Knowledge,

Wisdom and Devotion. The idol of Lord shiva has 5 heads there. And here is my

question: What is the significance of Lord Sriman Narayana reclining close to

the foot of the hill and why Godavari is coming out of the foot close to His

Navel. Because the sthala puranam as I read, does not have a mention about our

Lord. So I wanted to know, the association with Lord. And I also get pained by

the sthala puranam of Rameshwaram, where its said that Lord Rama worshipped

Shiva. Once I read that this does not find a place in Valmiki Ramayan and so

should be discarded. But then, whats the significance of Rameshwaram, as that

temle too serves the faith of man ardent devotees.

12TH CENTURY. DURING RAMANUJA'S PERIOD SUCH PRACTICE WAS NOT EXISTING. EVEN

SANKARACHARYA DID NOT ENCOURAGE THAT SYSTEM AT ALL. IN 14TH CENTURY, IT WAS

SPREADING LIKE ANYTHING. REASONS ARE MANY, OF COURSE.

 

HENCE, HISTORY OF RAMESWARAM IS NOT FROM PURANAS, NOR IT IS FROM ITIHASAS.

 

SERVING THE EXISTING SYSTEM AND THE FAITH IN WORDS OF VEDA PURUSHA, WAS THE

POLICY THEN BEFORE 12TH CENTURY. AFTER THAT CORRUPTION. NOW THAT HAS BEEN

DEVELOPED AND PROPAGATED BY THE SO-CALLED DHARMACHARYAS AND 'PEETTADHIPATIS'.

SIMILAR THE CASE WITH ANNAVARAM, TRIAMAKESWARA ETC. ORIGINAL SAIVISM OR

VAISHNAVISM IS LOST IN SUCH PLACES. EVEN TODAY, REAL SAIVITES DO NOT MIX UP THE

DIETIES LIKE THIS. SO ALSO VAISHNAVITES TOO WILL NEVER MIXUP THE THINGS. WE CAN

FIND THIS IN ORIGINAL COMMENTERIES OF THOSE ACHARYAS. MANY OF TODAY'S THIRYAK

PUNDRA DHARIES, DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY DO, EVEN. YOU NEED NOT BREAK THE HEAD WITH

THIS TYPE OF QUESTIONS. DO YOUR BEST, BY WORSHIPPING YOUR OWN AND RESPECTING
