Tuesday July 19 2005 12:34 IST

TIRUPATI: Chief priest of Lord Venkateswara temple on Tirumala, Madambakam

Srinivasa Bhattacharyulu, died after a prolonged illness early on Monday. He was

also advisor to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams on Agama Sastras.

He was 73 and is survived by wife, a son and two daughters. His mortal remains

were kept at Alipiri for people to pay their last respects. His body will be

cremated at Madambakam village, his native place, in Tamil Nadu. All the TTD

offices remained closed on Monday as a mark of respect.

Srinivasa Bhattacharyulu had been staying away from temple rituals for the past

one year due to ill health. An eminent scholar in the Vaikhanasa Agama Sastras,

he authored several books on the subject.

He joined the TTD in 1955 as an Archaka Gumastha and rose to the position of the

chief priest of the world’s famous temple. He was felicitated by the then

President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma in 1996.
