Guest guest
Friday November 18 2005 12:35 IST TIRUPATI: In a major move, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is regularising the Potu (Temple Kitchen) workers of Srivari Temple at Tirumala and they will receive their individual order within two to three days. Potu worker are those, who prepare Anna Prasadams of Lord Venkateswara, which includes the famous laddu. On an average, 152 Potu workers are involved in preparing one lakh laddus and other Annaprasadam every day. Some of the Annaprasadams are distributed freely to visiting pilgrims in the temple. >From several centuries, Potu workers were in Mirasisdhari system (Hereditary), dedicated to the temple. But, after the system was abolished in 1984, by the then Chief Minister N T Rama Rao, the condition of Potu workers started declining and they went to court seeking justice. Recently, after a prolonged legal battle between the Potu workers and the TTD administration, it has been decided to regularise the Potu workers. According to the TTD sources, the administration is also considering the request of aged employees to recruit their children on compassionate grounds. ‘‘Now we will get good salaries and benefits like every one else,’’ said a Potu worker, who at present earns Rs 50 daily. Potu Worker’s Union thanked TTD Executive Officer A P V N Sarma, Joint Executive Officer N Mukteswara Rao and Special Officer A V Dhrama Reddy for taking initiative and speeding up the regularisation process.
