BJP opposes ropeway project Tirupati: The BJP today strongly opposed the

ropeway project at Tirumala and threatened to launch a statewide signature

campaign on the issue.

Disclosing this to newspersons here, BJP National Secretary Bandaru Dattatreya

claimed the ropeway project was against the sentiments of the crores of devotees

of Lord Sri Venkateswara and would affect the sanctity of the temple.

He alleged the TTD gave its approval for the project under pressure from Chief

Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy ''without even consulting mutt heads,

peedathipathis and agama pundits.'' The BJP leader demanded dissolution of the

TTD Trust Board and consitution of the 'Dharma Parishad' (with mutt heads and

other religious leaders as committee members) for administration of temple.

The secular government should not interfere with the affairs of the temples, he

said.

Coming down heavily on TTD board members, he said they were not interested in

the welfare of the visiting pilgrims. The board mostly comprised of political

people who were paying more attention to their own interests, he claimed.

On the Chief Minister's contention that the ropeway existed at Palani and

Haridwar, he said at Tirumala there were seven hills each with its own history

and hence, no comparison could be made.
