I am happy to report on the 'Second India Conference' of the WAVES, held

December 24-25, 1998, in New Delhi and two other meetings held in Lucknow and

Banglore respectively. I had opportunity in attending these.

Second India Conference: This year, because of an overwhelming response from

academics, the conference was held for two days. In all there were seven

sessions, which included a panel discussion. There were 41 papers presented and

there were an additional 6 panel speakers. A copy of the full program giving

names and affiliations of the speakers along with the titles of their papers is

given below.

The participation was strong by all considerations. Over 200 people, mostly

academics from disciplines of history, political science, archaeology,

psychology, philosophy, languages, sciences, engineering, etc., participated.

Participating academics came from universities in the states of Andhra Pradesh,

Bihar, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Gujrat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar

Pradesh. Amongst the speakers were Chancellors of two universities and

Vice-Chancellors of two (Delhi, and Tirupati) universities, and a large number

of full professors in different universities. There were participants from

universities of Canada (Professor Onkar P. Dwivedi, Guelph) and US ( Professor

M. G. Prasad, NY; Dr. Ravinder Kumar and Ms Kanchan Manaktala, MS; Dr. Jagdish

The Conference was inaugurated by former federal minister Dr. Sarojini Mahishi,

who is currently Vice-Chairperson of the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Delhi. Dr.

was the Guest of Honour, and keynote address was given by Professor Vachaspati

Upadhyaya Vice-Chancellor, Shri L.al Bahadur Shastri. Sanskrit University, New

Delhi.

A number of persons took life/yearly membership of WAVES. The number of Life

members from India now stands at 39.

Meeting in Lucknow: It was held on December 18, 1998, and was organized Dr.

Jitendra Tripathi. There were about 70 participants, mostly persons involved in

Sanskrit teaching at various places in and around Lucknow, Kanpur, Ballia,

Sitapur, etc. The meeting was addressed by a former Governor and a retired

Judge of the High Court.

The convenor and participants decided to work for founding a Chapter of WAVES in

Lucknow.

Meeting in Banglore: It was held on December 26, 1998 and was convened by

Professor C. L. Prabhakar. Professor R. L. Kashyap (Gen. Secretary, WAVES) and

Professor M. G. Prasad (Steven Insititue of Technology, NY) were also present.

Some 30 people attended the meeting. Professor Bhu Dev Sharma explained the

scope of activities of WAVES. The convenor and participants formed an adhoc
