NOV.1ST 1999 Sat, 30 Oct 1999 09:23:12 -0400 (EDT) Ram Narayanan ramn Chandora muktachandora Errors-ramn Action Alert! Dear Chandora: The Human Rights Caucus of the US Congress is holding a "hearing" on Kashmir. It is set for Wednesday, November 3, 1999. It has invited Ghulam Nabi Fai, Usman Rahim Akhmet, and T. Kumar to testify. The first two are anti-India persons while the third represents Amnesty International. Congressmen John Potter and Lantos are convening it. The staffers involved are Ms K King and Jeannette (202-225-4835). So far no representative of pro-Indian Kashmiris, incuding the Kashmiri Pandit community, who have been subjected to horrendous human rights violations by Pakistani-backed militants, has been invited. Shri Rajender Razdan spoke with Ms Jeannette and learned that she is open to representatives of Kashmiri Pandits joining the meeting. Shri Razdan is trying to organize a few Kashmiri Pandits who will be able to take time off to join the hearings. I am not sure if at this point it would be possible for a pro-India Kashmiri expert to be invited as a witness to give evidence so that the field is not entirely left open to the ant-India elements. But no harm in try! ing. It may also be possible to brief the two Congressmen, to ask the right questions. If you are Kashmiri or have friends who are pro-India Kashmiris, including Pandits, and have in depth knowledge of the latest ground situation in Kashmir and would like to take time off to attend Wednesday's hearings, or pursue the other option suggested above, please call Ms Jeannette at 202 225 4835. Best wishes! Ram Narayanan Lobby for India on the internet at http://www.indiatogether.org/us/lobby.htm
