First Shahi Snan of Mahakumbh begins

Sunday, January 14 (Allahabad):

The first Shahi Snan of the Mahakumbh began early this morning. The

ritual began with the Naga Sanyasis leading the sadhus of 13 akharas

to the Sangam amid tight security. Security has been stepped up in

Allahabad with 7,000 police personnel being deployed to ensure that

the day, also called Makar Sakranti, passes peacefully.

The royal march of the sadhus, which began from the eastern banks of

the Sangam, took approximately two hours to reach the bathing ghat.

Lakhs of pilgrims coming from across the country were also seen

taking a holy dip at various other ghats. About five to ten million

people are expected to bathe at the holy Sangam by the end of the

day. There is tension in the city. The administration however has

ensured that things are under control.
