A severe earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale and with the epicentre in Gujarat rolled across the entire Indian subcontinent on Friday, rocking buildings in cities situated as far apart as India's Chennai and Pakistan's Karachi. Union home minister L K Advani said the death toll could be more than 1,000. The toll in Ahmedabad has already mounted to 260. Initial reports said Ahmedabad, Surat and and the coastal town of Bhuj bore the brunt of the quake. Ahmedabad reported 200 deaths followed by Bhuj (150), Surendranagar (54), Surat (27), Jodia Taluka in Jamnagar district (25), Bhavnagar (5), Navsari (5), Patan (4) and Rajkot (3), state home department spokesman K Nityanandam said.
