The historical perosnality known as Devaki Putra Krishna is mentioned

in innumerable instances of Hindu literature. From Panini to the

Harivamsha, Bhagavata, the Upanishads, the Jatakas, the Sutras and

even the Brahmanas confirm his existence. And although these literary

references coupled with the numerous archaeological evidence such as

the discovery of the underwater city of Dwarka are important towards

establishing the historical basis for Shree Krishna's existence, we

must not forget that folk tradition, popular arts and rituals all

have their basis in history as well. Therefore it is imperative to

understand the significance of the universal popularity of Shree

Krishna all over India, as reflected in its people's festive,

artistic, musical, dance, literary and spiritual traditions.

 

These are no less valuable as evidence of Shree Krishna's existence

and fame than archaeological objects or carbon dating. For they

demonstrate a consistent and unifying theme that underlies cultural

traditions all over India; the love and respect for Krishna. How else

does one explain the universality of His appeal or the detail

with which anecdotes of his life are related and reenacted in every

state of this vast and varied country.

 

>From Arunachal to Kerala, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, every state

has its own special story to tell, its own special connection to

Krishna and its own endearing way of honoring this legend. What

greater testament is there to national integration and harmony than

the concordance of a nation inspired together one billion strong by

the highest of philosophies as espoused by the greatest of souls, in

the form of the Bhagvad Geeta of Shree Krishna.

 

Let us celebrate together the eternal legacy of the Supreme Avatar

who out of his own benevolence and love gave us the 'The Song Divine'

which contains the highest doctrines and essence of the Vedas and

enunciates the principles and practices of Sankhya and Karma Yoga,

guiding each of us towards the realization of the Highest Personality

that is God.
