Guest guest
US to lift sanctions against India within six months: envoy New Delhi, April 14 The United States will lift sanctions against India within the next three to six months, Washington's outgoing ambassador to New Delhi said Saturday. Richard Celeste, in an interview with the Hindu daily, said the Bush administration would lift the wideranging sanctions imposed against India in 1998 later this year. He said India's statements pledging a unilateral moratorium on nuclear testing and a no first use of nuclear weapons "are very important to the Bush administration." This accounted for the US being "comfortable" with the idea of India being a force for stability in the region, he said. If India were to change its mind on its moratorium on nuclear testing, there was an "implicit" belief that, "we (the US) would know about it," Celeste said. The sanctions were imposed in the aftermath of New Delhi's shock nuclear tests in May 1998, which saw Indo-US relations plummet to an all time low. Celeste also said India was a "friend" of the United States and would listen to New Delhi's views on the controversial US National Missile Defence programme.
