On Wednesday, April 18th, the group met at 7pm at Maharaja restaurant to determine its next set of objectives. The diverse group began its discussion with updates on projects that different members were working on to communicate its work to the larger community and to provide opportunities for education and discussion. Some of the ways that the group plans to communicate its results are through a planned website, through cosponsoring events with interested organizations, and through the media. Several members shared their progress on bringing speakers to Atlanta that would help to raise awareness and encourage meaningful dialogue on South Asian issues. Sabiha Mujtaba lead a discussion on how the group could address the most difficult issues in an organized and respectful way. She identified four topic areas that could be used to focus the group's discussion: social, political, religious, and ethical. Sabiha pointed out the importance for SA4U's members to have understanding and trust between each other before they can work on the most difficult but important South Asian issues. Several members agreed with the framework that Ms. Mujtaba proposed. The group clearly saw the importance of communicating their work to the larger South Asian community and to encourage participation in SA4U events. Vasant Krishna asked the group to make sure it takes action on issues as well and does not stop at having discussions only. The group's activities and its membership can only grow if community members believe in and become active in issues that SA4U is addressing. Dr. Bikramjit Garcha summarized the group's next goals as: 1. Grow closer together (cohesion) 2. Grow in size 3. Gain influence SA4U meets the third Wednesday of every month at 7pm. Currently the group has been meeting at Maharaja restaurant on Lavista Road near Northlake Mall. SA4U's next meeting is on Wednesday, May 16th, at 7pm at Maharaja restaurant. Anyone interested in the objectives of SA4U is welcome to join us for teh meeting. There is no membership cost, but everyone pays $10 each to cover the cost of the dinner. For more information about SA4U please contact Ritesh Desai at 770-696-4798 or ritesh_desai or Khurram Hassan at kohassan . ------ 14) From Prabal Roy [proy2] ------ YOUNG ADULTS CONVENTION 2001 August 31- September 2 The India Association of Charlotte is organizing a convention for young adults in an attempt to address growing needs of the Indian Community. This special first convention is planned for the labor day weekend of 2001 in Charlotte, NC in a hotel yet to be decided. The convention is expected to provide a platform for young people to meet. As our community grows and matures the number of young people becoming adult also grows and in recent years it is high enough to where the community feels a need to address the future of Indian family. In response to this need many groups have organized conventions to facilitate the meeting of young people and their families. These conventions are normally organized on the basis of state, language, or religion; for example, Maharastrian, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, and Jain conventions are held. By the nature of these conventions, people from all over the U.S. come to the gathering and when young people find friends in this get together, friends are often from a far away place. Meeting people who live far away discourages further development of friendship. Therefore, the convention now being planned focuses on a region of about a 200-mile radius around Charlotte. Although focusing on the region is a unique feature of the convention, it will be open to people from other regions. Another unique feature of the convention is that it will not be based on state, language, or religion of India. ------ 15) From Dr. Beheruz N.
