Guest guest
The African Connection An Indian of African Origin >From a Deccan Miniature Painting http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/people/1097.htm During this Black History Month (Feb. 2000), we recognize the Indians of African Origin. Shown in the picture above is an African merchant in India. The Janjeera people, believed to be of Ethiopian origin, came to India on business and went on to control important positions in local governments during the fifteenth century. A fort built by them, and defended against even the forces as strong as that of Shivaji's can be visited in Maharashtra today. Of course, the most important bond between the African continent and the Indian subcontinent is one of peace, initiated by Mahatma Gandhi while he was in South Africa. But interestingly, the relationship extends far before the European occupation, as can be seen from this presentation. One of the most ancient historical artifacts found in the Indus valley resembles a African woman, and Lord Krishna (black tribal) is one of the important deities of Hinduism.
