The Vedic discipline was carried through history in an oral tradition. Its single written source, Natya-sastra, dates back about 200 years before Christ. This Sanscrit scripture on dance and drama was composed by Bharata Muni. The sage considered the performance of temple dance jnana-yajna, a sacrifice of divine knowledge. The visnu-dasi (servant of the Lord) brings luck and prosperity to the host of the performance. The spectators being absorbed in the aesthetic taste (rasa) of the Lord's pastimes experience spiritual enlightenment, a sensorial clarity, happiness, and a relief of mundane worries. Indira Dasi Recitals Indira is brahmini and an aspiring practicioner of the ecstatic philosophy of rupanuga-bhakti established by the Six Gosvamis of Vrndavana. In the guidance of her spiritual master in the Gaudiya-parampara of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu she studied krsna-lila, Krsna's youthful pastimes with the gopis of Vraja. In Cennai and Mombai she specialized in the krsna-padams, the lila described in Gita-Govinda. Indira performs on the annual Vedic Festivals in the assembly of holy men and devotees at the request of the most rasika connoisseurs of today, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Gosvami Maharaja. Bharata Muni recommends the performance of dance on the occasion of religious festivals, the inauguration of a king, weddings, the birth of a son, etc. Indira is a devoted temple dancer and unknown to the general public. She is an exponent of the gracious Pandanallur style of Vidvan Kitappa Pillai of Tanjore, South India.
