Guest guest
@@@@@@@@@@@ Bhaktisiddhanta egroup Question & Answer Service Vol.1 No.6 July 2001 - #22 Divorce @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ QUESTION: #22 (11-06-01) Divorce I would like to ask Srila Gurudeva or some of his experienced (grhastha-)devotees some practical questions: Why divorce is bad, why all sastras forbid it? Are there any situations, when divorce can be approved? What are the situations? Is there any approvement for divorce when both spouses are devotees? What are karmic reactions for divorce? How divorce affects spiritual life of spouses? If both of them gave their personal promisses to Srila Gurudeva "to never divorce till the end of their life", but nevertheless later on one of the spouse are wanting to divorce, because (s)he hopes to meet "love" in his(er) life -- what should another spouse do in such situation to stop this divorce? How should other devotees react on the situation, when in their sanga there is a divorce? Your servant,Agha-ripu das ANSWER: given by Sripad Bhaktivedanta Madhava Maharaja. Divorce, from Indian ancient vedic times ladies never divorce their husbands. Even when gopis came to Krishna, He instructed them to serve their husbands. Even when a husband is lame or handicapped, still the wife should serve him and never divorce. Krishna's instruction is this and we should never disobey Krishna's instruction. Sri Srimad Bhagavatam, Sloka 24,25,26 in 10th canto, chapter 29. The highest religious duty for women is to sincerely serve her husband, behave well towards her husband's family and take good care of her children. Women who desire a good destination in their next life, they should never abandon their husband who has not fallen from his religious standards. Even he may be obnoxious, unfortunate, old, unintelligent, sickly or poor. Adulteration for a woman is very bad and will bring only misfortune.Only one condition is there they can divorce. Not only that, Sri Rsabhdeva instructed His sons 'gurur na sa syat etc', Sri Srimad Bhagavatam, sloka 18, canto 5, chapter 5. When there is divorce on this ground, then there is no more right to remarry. One should do bhajan and be renounced. When both are devotees there is no reason for divorce. See very carefully the explanation in 10th canto, thus everything is clear. @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Attachment: (image/jpeg) Gopi.jpg [not stored]
