Vajpayee accepts invitation to visit Pakistan

Updated on 2001-07-16 13:40:15

AGRA, July 16 (PNS): Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has

accepted an invitation to visit Pakistan following his path-breaking

one-on-one meeting with President Pervez Musharraf here, officials

said Sunday.

No dates have been set for the visit, which will be his second since

his February 1999 historic bus journey to the Pakistani city of

Lahore.

However, informed sources said the visit could take place only at the

end of the year because Vajpayee was likely to meet Musharraf on the

sidelines of a UN General Assembly meeting in New York in September

and the Commonwealth Summit in Brisbane in October.

Meanwhile Indian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Nuropuma Rao while

addressing a press conference here on Sunday after the meeting said

that Premier Atal Behari Vajpayee and President General Pervez

Musharraf held one-on-one talks in a cordial, frank and constructive

manner that lasted for one an hour.

The spokeswoman instructed the journalists not to ask any question

and read out a written statement at a leisurely pace.

The spokeswoman said that the two heads of the state also held

delegation level talks for more than one hour and agreed to hold

talks on official as well as ministerial level.

The acceptance of the Musharraf invitation by Vajpayee indicates that

the two countries have decided to re-engage at the highest level

after a gap of over two years.
