Guest guest Posted October 23, 2001 Report Share Posted October 23, 2001 'China's PLA now capable of waging psycho warfare' BEIJING: China on Tuesday announced that the three wings of its 1.2 million-strong People's Liberation Army (PLA) were now capable of waging psychological warfare. "The first group of officers from the PLA has graduated after a year's specialised study in psychological warfare undertaken in an Army school, and marking a significant step in the building of PLA's psychwar army", the official Xinhua news agency reported. The officers graduated from PLA's XI'an political institute in north- west China's Shaanxi province and were recruited from the PLA's land, sea and air troops. of the Institute of Psychwar of the Chinese PLA, Ma Zhong, said psychological techniques to confuse the enemy were one of the three principal guidelines introduced by the late chairman Mao Zedong. Modern psychwar has now penetrated political, economic and diplomatic fields which have connections with the military, Ma said. According to dean of the Psychwar Department at the XI'an institute, Wu Jincang, the students would be taught seven courses including military psychology, social psychology, psychwar in high-tech warfare, soldier psychology and the theory and practice of psychwar. Approved by the Central Military Commission, headed by President Jiang Zemin, PLA's XI'an political institute established the psychwar education research office in 1999.
