Guest guest
After Lingaraj, dieties stolen from Puri's Jagannath Temple HT Correspondent Puri, November 11 ---- ---------- Two dieties — of Madan Mohan and Narayan — were stolen from the 12th century Jagannath Temple here on Saturday night. The burglars couldn't break into the temple's `ratna bhandar', where jewellery and ornaments are kept. But they did manage to break the locks of two offices in the temple complex. Sunday was Krushnapakshya Ekadashi, the day on which the idol of Lord Jagannath is taken around the temple with the idol of Madan Mohan on his left. The morning Jagannath puja and other rituals were postponed on Sunday and the main temple was sealed till afternoon. The idol of Madan Mohan was replaced with another one and the rituals started at about 1.30 p.m. Devotees were not allowed into the main temple. Saturday's burglary comes soon after the theft in Bhubane-swar's Lingaraj Temple. Chief Minister Naveen Pattnaik, who visited the temple on Sunday, ordered a Crime Branch inquiry into the burglary and said he would seek a CBI probe. Eight personnel of the Jagannath Temple Police and five of the Orissa Police were suspended. Three members of the temple administration were taken into police custody, Pattnaik said. Pattnaik promised the government would do everything to ensure that such incidents do not recur. To beef up security at the Jagannath Temple, a Deputy Superintendent of Police and an assistant temple administrator would be appointed, he said. Puri SP S.K. Priyadarshi said the burglary could be an insider's job. He did not rule out the possibility that the same group was involved in both the thefts.
