Guest guest
Change one-sided history: Vajpayee New Delhi, Nov 24 Prime Minister A B Vajpayee said Saturday experts should be allowed to re-write 'one-sided' history, amid a furore about the Government's reported plans to delete certain statements from school books. Vajpayee told reporters that 'one-sided history' should be changed if necessary. "We are ready for a debate in Parliament on this issue and if history is one-sided, it should be changed," he said, dismissing allegations that the BJP government was injecting ideology into classrooms. The government's human resources ministry has reportedly asked schools to delete certain sections from text books regarding the consumption of beef, caste discrimination and Hindu gods. Opposition leaders likened the government to Afghanistan's hardline Taliban for wanting to make the changes. The Government was acting like a 'fascist and a Taliban', Pranab Mukherjee of the main opposition Congress party said Friday. Another Congress leader, Arjun Singh, said the ministry in-charge of education had been 'Talibanise". MPs of Vajpayee's party reacted strongly to the opposition allegations, demanding the deletion of words such as 'Talibanisation' from the parliament records. One of the passages that the Government wants dropped from history textbooks claims that archeological evidence cast doubt on the existence of the mythological Hindu warrior lords Rama and Krishna, The Indian Express newspaper reported. Another section that will reportedly be deleted from another book says that in ancient India beef was served as a mark of honour to revered guests and in later centuries high-caste Hindu priests were forbidden to eat beef.
