Guest guest
Cong, Trinamul concern over influx of Bangladeshis NEW DELHI: Congress and Trinamul Congress members in Lok Sabha on Monday voiced serious concern over influx of Hindus from Bangladesh into India and asked the government to direct BSF to exercise restraint. Raising the issue during the zero hour, Congress member Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the refugee influx has been triggered by atrocities being committed on minorities by fundamentalist elements in Bangladesh after the change of government in Dhaka. Chowdhury also sought restraint on the part of BSF guarding the border saying that it should not resort to firing. He demanded that the refugee problem should be effectively taken up by India with the Khalida Zia government in Bangladesh. Trinamul Congress leader Mamata Banerjee said the minorities, who were fleeing to West Bengal, Tripura, Assam and Meghalaya, should be granted refugee status, housed in relief camps and not described as infiltrators. Recalling that one girl was recently killed in firing by BSF, she said the border force should not do anything that would raise tension.
