Toronto----Guyanese born Mr Dukhran passed away peacefully on

December 18,2001 at the Peel Memorial Hospital after a brief

illness.He had attained the legendary age of 107,being born on

November 18,1894.He was at the time living with his daughter Jaiseni

in Brampton.

 

Mr Dukhran was born in Windsor Forest,West Coast Demerara,Guyana

where his father Ramotar Bhagat and mother Gangadai had been

indentured (originally from Aksi,Uttar Pradesh) just two years before

his birth.

 

In his early years Mr Dukhran worked in the sugar estate and helped

his parents tend their cows..Later he took to rice farming,then milk

vending and later yet,to selling ice in the villages from Windsor

Forest to Hague.He was also Supervisor of the Common Pasture in

Windsor Forest for 16 years.He evidently walked several miles every

day.Later in life he was entrusted with the Chairmanship of the

village Panchayat to help solve local problems and family disputes.

 

Mr Dukhran had a wide interest in matters of the world and a specific

interest in religion.Living opposite the village Hindu Mandir,he

spent a lot of time in,and was strongly influenced by the teachings

disseminated there.He also taught Hindi at the Mandir.He and his

entire family were vegetarians.

 

Mr Dukhran migrated to Canada in 1983.He felt a sense of gratitude to

this country that he was allowed to join his family here.

 

Mr Dukhran is survived by his five children, 46 grand children, 99

great grand children and 20 great great grand children.
